Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is the oldest airport in Kerala and the southernmost international gateway in mainland India, serving Kerala's capital and functioning as the closest Indian airport to the Gulf Cooperation Council labor corridor. TRV handles 41 scheduled routes to 25 nonstop destinations operated by 18 airlines, with Middle Eastern carrier presence exceptional for an airport of its passenger volume — Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, flydubai, Saudia, Oman Air, Air Arabia, and Salam Air all fly the Thiruvananthapuram–Gulf corridor driven by Kerala's massive expatriate workforce in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait. The airport operates from a single 11,148 ft (3,398 m) asphalt runway 14/32 at an elevation of 15 ft (5 m) on the Arabian Sea shoreline, with a distinctive separated-terminal configuration: T1 handles domestic traffic while T2, a separate modernized terminal on the opposite side of the runway, handles international operations. This separation reflects the asymmetric nature of TRV's traffic mix, where international movements historically outstripped domestic before the post-2016 ultra-low-cost domestic expansion. In 2021 the Government of India leased operational control of TRV to Adani Airports Holdings for 50 years, part of a wider privatization of six state-owned airports. Internationally significant aspects include the airport's role as a principal foreign-exchange remittance conduit — Gulf-route remittances through Kerala drove India's USD 111 billion remittance total for 2022, the largest of any country — and its status as the only Indian airport with scheduled service to the Maldives (Malé) via multiple daily rotations operated by IndiGo, Air India Express, and SriLankan Airlines connecting onward to Colombo.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Thiruvananthapuram

Public transportation

Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) low-floor air-conditioned buses depart directly outside T1 and T2 to East Fort bus stand, Thampanoor Central, and Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station. Non-AC services connect to Kovalam beach (16 km / 10 mi) and Vizhinjam. Fares run INR 30–80; pay in cash or via the Kerala RIDE app. The proposed Kochi–Thiruvananthapuram MEMU suburban rail corridor (Silver Line) is under federal review as of 2026.

Taxis & rideshare

Government-authorised prepaid taxi counters operate 24/7 inside both terminals. Fixed fares to central Thiruvananthapuram (6 km / 3.7 mi) run INR 350–450 and to Kovalam INR 700–900. Uber and Ola operate designated zones outside arrivals with app-metered fares typically 25–40% lower. All commercial taxis carry yellow license plates.

Rental cars

Several national and local agencies — Zoomcar, Myles, Avis, Eco Rent A Car — offer self-drive and chauffeur-driven services via online booking with terminal delivery. Self-drive requires an Indian driving licence or an International Driving Permit plus a refundable deposit of INR 10,000–25,000. Most Gulf-based Kerala expatriates traveling home opt for chauffeur-driven SUVs given luggage volume and family transfers to interior districts.
