Ibiza Airport is one of the most extreme examples in European aviation of a seasonal demand curve: a single-runway Balearic island airport that briefly outranks several national capitals during the summer peak and contracts sharply in winter. AENA-operated and situated 4 mi (7 km) southwest of Ibiza Town at 24 ft (7 m) elevation on the island's southern coastal plain, it handles 173 routes across 88 destinations through 56 airlines — an unusually high carrier count for a seasonal leisure airport that reflects the island's status as a pan-European clubbing and luxury-leisure destination rather than a year-round connecting hub. No airline bases a large operation at IBZ year-round; instead, Ryanair, Vueling, easyJet, British Airways, Jet2, TUI, Iberia, Air Europa, Eurowings, Lufthansa, KLM, Transavia, and Volotea scale capacity dramatically between May and September. Peak-season traffic is drawn almost entirely from UK, German, Italian, French, Dutch, Swiss, and Spanish mainland origins, with the busiest corridors being London (combined LGW/LTN/STN/LHR), Barcelona, Madrid, Manchester, Milan, Paris, and Amsterdam. The airport also serves as one of Europe's most intense summer business-jet destinations during July and August, when private-aviation movements regularly saturate the general-aviation apron and spill onto overflow stands. The single asphalt runway (06/24) measures 9,186 ft (2,800 m) and handles narrowbody traffic up to 757 and A321neo; widebodies are rare but occasional Condor and British Airways 777 charters appear at peak. A terminal modernization completed in the 2010s added a dedicated boarding satellite (Module B) to handle summer throughput, but the airport's physical footprint remains tightly constrained by the adjacent Ses Salines wetland nature reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage natural site), which permanently limits further expansion. During August weekends, IBZ has recorded more than 600 commercial movements per day — a figure comparable to medium-sized European hubs operating year-round.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Ibiza (Eivissa)

Public transportation

Route L10 runs year-round between the airport and Ibiza Town (Avenida d'Espanya / bus station), with typical journey time 15–20 minutes and fares of EUR 3.50. From June through October, seasonal routes L9 (to Sant Antoni de Portmany) and direct services to Santa Eulalia and Platja d'en Bossa supplement the core network, running roughly every 30 minutes. Bus stops are located directly outside the arrivals hall; tickets are purchased in cash from the driver.

Taxis & rideshare

Official metered taxis queue at the rank outside arrivals and operate under regulated Consell d'Eivissa tariffs with an airport supplement. Typical fares are EUR 15–20 to Ibiza Town (10 min), EUR 25–35 to Sant Antoni de Portmany (20 min), and EUR 35–45 to Santa Eulalia. Demand vastly exceeds supply during July and August peak hours, with reported waits of 45–90 minutes; pre-booked private transfers are the standard workaround. Uber operates a limited service via app, with surge pricing during festival weekends.

Rental cars

Major international operators — Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Enterprise, Goldcar — plus local brands Record Go and Class Rent a Car staff desks in the arrivals hall, with fleets parked in the adjacent airport car-rental lots a 2–3 minute walk from the terminal. Advance booking is essential from June through September, when island-wide fleet inventory is routinely exhausted. A valid EU license or International Driving Permit plus a credit card for deposit are required.
