Hurghada International Airport is Egypt's second-busiest airport by international passenger traffic after Cairo (CAI) and one of the largest dedicated leisure-tourism airports on the African continent, serving 58 airlines on 227 routes to 110 nonstop destinations. Located 5 km (3 mi) southwest of the resort city of Hurghada on Egypt's Red Sea coast, HRG sits at just 32 ft (10 m) of elevation between the sea and the Eastern Desert, and handles one of the most sharply charter-weighted traffic profiles of any major African airport — the overwhelming majority of flights are seasonal inbound tourism services from Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Italy. The airport's significance in the Egyptian economy is disproportionate to its airline count: Hurghada and the surrounding Red Sea Riviera (Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Safaga) represent one of the country's largest foreign-currency earners through beach tourism and scuba diving on the northern Red Sea reef system. Carriers serving HRG include TUI fly Deutschland, Corendon, Pegasus, SunExpress, Condor, AlMasria, Nouvelair, and the Russian carriers that have returned in phased stages since late 2021 after a six-year suspension following the 2015 Metrojet Flight 9268 disaster that originated at Sharm El-Sheikh. HRG operates two long parallel asphalt runways — 16L/34R at 13,171 ft (4,014 m) and 16R/34L at 13,168 ft (4,013 m) — with the second runway 197 ft (60 m) wide and capable of handling the largest wide-body aircraft. The paired runways permit independent simultaneous operations and are oversized for the airport's predominantly narrow-body charter traffic, reflecting the original Egyptian government strategy to future-proof the airport against long-haul growth. Terminal 2, opened in 2015, added contemporary capacity for international charter flows; Terminal 1 continues to serve domestic and some scheduled international traffic.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Hurghada

Public transportation

Direct public bus service from the terminal is limited and oriented to local workers rather than tourists. The practical public option is to walk to the main Hurghada highway outside the airport and board a local minibus ('microbus') to Sekalla, El Dahar, or the Touristic Promenade for EGP 5–10. Most visitors rely instead on pre-booked shuttle transfers included with hotel packages or on private transfer operators, which offer direct service to resort properties at fixed rates.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxis operate 24/7 outside the arrival terminals. There is no meter; fares must be negotiated and agreed upon before departure. Typical fares run EGP 200–400 to central Hurghada hotels (15 minutes), EGP 500–800 to El Gouna (30 minutes), and EGP 700–1,200 to Makadi Bay or Soma Bay (45 minutes). Uber and Careem ride-hailing apps provide standardized metered pricing and are a preferred option for visitors unfamiliar with the local fare market.

Rental cars

Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, and local Egyptian operators including Bavaria Auto and El Gouna Rent-a-Car maintain desks in the arrivals halls of both terminals. An International Driving Permit plus home-country license is typically required along with a credit card deposit. Vehicles access the coastal Hurghada–Safaga highway directly. Road conditions on major coastal routes are good; desert driving into the interior (Luxor, Qena) should only be attempted with full fuel and a GPS.
