Getting to the airport
Ground transport options from Astana
Public transportation
Public buses are the most economical option for reaching central Astana. Bus routes 10 and 12 provide direct service between NQZ and key locations including the city center, the Nurly Zhol railway station, and the Bayterek Tower area. Buses run frequently from early morning to late at night with stops directly outside the airport terminals. Fare is KZT 180–250 (roughly USD 0.35–0.50) paid in cash to the driver or via the Onay transport card. Journey time to the city center is approximately 30–45 min depending on stops.
Taxis & rideshare
Official airport taxi services operate from counters in the arrivals halls of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, offering fixed-rate trips to the city center. Yandex Go — the Russian ride-hailing app — is the dominant unofficial option at NQZ with designated pickup points outside the terminal and typically 40–60% lower fares than rank taxis; local apps inDrive and Bolt also operate. Typical Yandex Go fares run KZT 2,500–4,500 (USD 5–9) to central Astana for a 25–40 min trip. Unofficial drivers should be avoided for safety and cost reasons.
Rental cars
Several international and Kazakh car rental companies maintain service desks in the arrivals area of Terminal 1. Providers include Avis, Hertz, and local Kazakh operators. Pre-booking online is recommended given limited walk-up availability. A valid passport, driver license, International Driving Permit, and credit card deposit are typically required for foreign renters. Winter-tire-equipped vehicles are standard from October through April given Astana's severe continental climate. Self-drive is relatively uncommon among foreign visitors given traffic conditions, language barriers (with most signage in Kazakh and Russian Cyrillic), and the extensive taxi/ride-hail coverage.
