Sheremetyevo International is Russia's busiest airport and the principal international gateway to Moscow, handling roughly 43M passengers (2024) across 203 weekly routes to 130 destinations on 31 airlines. SVO is the flagship hub of Aeroflot, the SkyTeam Russian flag carrier, as well as its low-cost subsidiary Pobeda — together accounting for the majority of daily movements. The airport sits 29 km (18 mi) northwest of central Moscow in the town of Khimki, operating from a campus that was largely rebuilt in the 2010s with new terminals and a third parallel runway commissioned in 2019. The airport's current configuration spans six terminals — B, C1, C2, D, E, and F — with the B-C northern complex serving most international Aeroflot departures and the D-E-F southern complex handling domestic and Schengen traffic, connected by an underground people-mover that opened in 2018. Three parallel runways include the longest at 12,139 ft (3,700 m) and two others at 11,647 ft (3,550 m) and 10,499 ft (3,200 m), permitting simultaneous independent operations. Sheremetyevo opened in 1959 as Moscow's replacement international airport and was significantly expanded for the 1980 Olympics and again for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. International reach has contracted substantially since 2022 as Western European and North American carriers suspended Russian operations following the invasion of Ukraine. Current international connectivity is concentrated on Turkey, UAE, China, India, and Central Asia — Beijing, Shanghai, Istanbul, Dubai, Baku, Yerevan, and Tashkent operate as daily or multi-daily markets. Aeroflot continues to operate the densest domestic network in Russia, with SVO functioning as the principal connecting point between European Russia, Siberia, and the Far East, reaching Vladivostok (6,400 km), Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and Anadyr.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Moscow

Public transportation

The Aeroexpress high-speed train is the fastest option to central Moscow, connecting SVO to Belorussky Railway Station in 35–50 minutes for approximately RUB 500, with departures every 30 minutes from 05:00 to 00:30. Public buses provide more economical alternatives — Express bus 1195 to Khovrino metro station, bus 851 to Rechnoy Vokzal, and bus 817 to Planernaya, all reaching Moscow Metro interchanges in 30–50 minutes. Night bus H1 runs to the city center when the metro is closed.

Taxis & rideshare

Yandex.Go operates as the dominant licensed taxi and ride-hailing service, bookable at official counters in the arrivals halls of each terminal or via the Yandex.Go mobile app with fixed in-app pricing. A ride to central Moscow typically costs RUB 1,500–2,500 in 40–90 minutes depending on traffic on the Leningradskoye Highway. Foreign visitors are strongly advised to use the official Yandex.Go stands and avoid unsolicited drivers in the terminal.

Rental cars

Russian rental operators including Rentmotors and Europcar Russia have desks in the arrivals areas of the main terminals. International brand availability has contracted since 2022. An International Driving Permit alongside the home-country license is typically required, and payment in rubles by Russian-issued card is standard — Western-issued credit cards do not work at most counters, which limits practicality for foreign visitors.
