Toussaint Louverture International Airport is the principal international airport of Haiti, serving the capital Port-au-Prince and functioning as the country's primary air gateway to the world. Named after Toussaint Louverture (c. 1743–1803), the leader of the Haitian Revolution that produced the world's first successful slave revolt and the first Black-led independent nation in the Americas, the airport is located 6 mi (10 km) northeast of central Port-au-Prince at 122 ft (37 m) elevation. The airport has faced extraordinary operational challenges through successive crises including the January 2010 earthquake (which severely damaged terminal structures), the 2021 presidential assassination of Jovenel Moïse, and the ongoing gang-violence security crisis that has periodically forced temporary suspension of scheduled commercial service and operations at a military-secured perimeter. The airport handles 7 routes across 7 destinations through 4 airlines. American Airlines operates the flagship link to Miami, a route historically central to Haitian-American family travel and business connections between Haiti and the large Haitian diaspora in South Florida. Spirit Airlines, Sunrise Airways, and Caribbean carriers provide additional service to the United States (Fort Lauderdale, New York JFK), the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo, Punta Cana), and the Turks and Caicos. Air France and other international carriers have periodically suspended and restored service in response to the security situation. The route network reflects Haiti's diaspora-driven travel profile, with Miami-based flows by far the most significant. The single asphalt runway 10/28 measures 9,974 ft (3,040 m), long enough for widebody operations. The terminal complex was substantially rebuilt in the 2010s following earthquake damage with U.S., Venezuelan, and Taiwanese assistance. The airport is operated by the Autorité Aéroportuaire Nationale (AAN). A secondary domestic airport, Toussaint Louverture's Guy Malary Terminal, handles inter-Haitian services to Cap-Haïtien (CAP), Jérémie, and other provincial points. PAP's operational continuity during crises has been sustained through close coordination with UN mission aviation, MINUJUSTH/BINUH, and U.S. Embassy-affiliated operations.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Port-au-Prince

Public transportation

No formal scheduled public bus or rail system connects directly to the airport. Haiti's characteristic 'tap-tap' colorfully-decorated pickup-truck public transport operates across Port-au-Prince but is not recommended for international arrivals, tourists, or first-time visitors due to overcrowding, unpredictable schedules, and potential security concerns.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxis wait outside the arrivals terminal. For security, using only authorized services is strongly recommended. Fares are negotiated rather than metered and must be agreed before departure. US dollars and Haitian gourdes are both commonly accepted. Pre-arranged hotel transfers are the preferred option for most visitors.

Rental cars

International agencies Avis, Hertz, and Budget, plus local operators, maintain service desks inside the terminal. Driving conditions in Haiti are challenging due to traffic, road quality, and security considerations; chauffeur-driven hire is a widely recommended alternative to self-drive and is offered by most agencies.
