Palm Beach International is South Florida's third-largest commercial airport and one of the United States' busiest origin-and-destination leisure gateways relative to its population base, serving 246 destinations across 56 airlines in the global route graph. PBI's disproportionate network reflects the Palm Beach region's standing as a concentrated wealth corridor — from Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens down through Palm Beach island and Boca Raton — and the corresponding demand for direct service to the Northeast, Midwest, and the Caribbean. American, JetBlue, Delta, Southwest, and United operate daily from PBI, with major seasonal expansions from December through April tracking the snowbird migration. The airport has recorded some of the fastest post-pandemic traffic recovery in the U.S. as year-round remote workers relocated to Palm Beach County, driving a step-change in demand that has filled previously seasonal routes. PBI also functions as a critical general-aviation overflow for Miami and Fort Lauderdale, with heavy business-jet traffic supported by three FBOs. The airport sits at 19 ft (6 m) elevation, 5 km west of downtown West Palm Beach. Three runways include a primary 10,001 ft (3,049 m) strip capable of transcontinental and transatlantic widebody operations, a 6,931 ft (2,113 m) crosswind runway, and a 3,214 ft (980 m) GA strip. A single consolidated terminal houses Concourses A, B, and C with 28 gates, and a master-plan expansion under review will add a fourth concourse to match the region's forecast growth. PBI's transit accessibility — with Tri-Rail commuter rail feeding into Miami and Fort Lauderdale — is a rare advantage among Florida leisure gateways.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from West Palm Beach

Public transportation

Palm Tran Route 44 serves PBI from the outer curb of Level One, connecting to downtown West Palm Beach and the West Palm Beach Tri-Rail station for $2.00. Tri-Rail commuter trains then run south to Fort Lauderdale (60 min) and Miami (90 min) with frequencies every 30–60 minutes. A free airport shuttle also operates to the Tri-Rail station during daytime hours, making PBI one of the few Florida airports with practical rail connectivity.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis queue 24/7 on Level One at the baggage claim curb, with metered fares and no reservation required. Downtown West Palm Beach typically runs $15–20 in 10 minutes; Palm Beach island $25–30; Boca Raton $55–70 in 30–45 minutes. Uber and Lyft operate from designated pickup zones on the outer Level One curb with separately priced ride-app fees.

Rental cars

All major providers — Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt, Thrifty — operate on-site on Level One adjacent to baggage claim, with no shuttle required. Vehicles are picked up from the attached garage within a 2–3 minute walk. Given PBI's role as a seasonal leisure gateway, January–April reservations should be secured weeks in advance at substantial premium pricing.
