Philadelphia International is American Airlines' primary trans-atlantic gateway on the U.S. East Coast, a role that outsizes the airport's otherwise mid-tier overall passenger volume. It serves 50 airlines on 470 routes to 202 nonstop destinations, and despite a metropolitan market smaller than New York, Boston, or Washington, PHL operates more daily nonstop flights to Europe than BOS or IAD. The airport sits 11 km (7 mi) southwest of Center City Philadelphia on 2,598 acres (1,051 ha) straddling the Delaware River estuary. The hub dynamic here is distinctive: American inherited the Philadelphia operation from its 2013 merger with US Airways, which had built PHL as its trans-atlantic hub to exploit the airport's geographic position halfway between New York and Washington — close enough to draw traffic from both markets while avoiding the slot constraints of JFK and EWR. The network reaches most major European capitals, secondary European cities (Athens, Dublin, Edinburgh, Zurich, Rome), and a dense Caribbean and Mexican program. Four runways including the 12,000 ft (3,658 m) 09R/27L support morning and evening long-haul banks. Seven terminals (A-West and A-East, B, C, D, E, F) are arranged in a linear configuration connected airside; Terminal A-West is the dedicated international pier with a U.S. customs and immigration processing facility sized for the trans-atlantic fleet. Terminal F serves the American Eagle regional operation, the largest regional-jet feed program in the U.S. East Coast. The airport's long-term Capacity Enhancement Program includes a proposed fifth runway parallel to 09/27 to increase peak arrival capacity under instrument conditions.

Ground transport options from Philadelphia

Public transportation

SEPTA's Airport Line regional rail connects Terminals A through E directly to Center City (30th Street, Suburban, Jefferson stations) in 20–25 minutes for $6.75, running every 30 minutes from 05:00 to midnight. SEPTA bus routes 37, 108, and 115 serve neighborhoods around Philadelphia; the Ben FL shuttle runs to Frankford Transportation Center for transfers to the Market-Frankford subway line.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxis queue at dispatcher-operated stands on the Arrivals level Zone 5 of each terminal. A flat fare of $28.50 applies to Center City Philadelphia (between Fairmount Ave and Tasker St, river to river) plus tolls; the trip typically takes 20–30 minutes off-peak. Destinations outside that zone are metered. Rideshare has dedicated curbs at each terminal.

Rental cars

Rental agencies operate from a consolidated Ground Transportation Center reached by the free Rental Car Shuttle running every 5–10 minutes from the Zone 2 curb outside each terminal's baggage claim. Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, National, Alamo, Dollar, Thrifty, and Sixt share the facility. Vehicles exit via I-95 (north to Center City in 15 minutes or south to Wilmington and Baltimore) or I-476 west toward the Pennsylvania suburbs.
