Louisville Muhammad Ali International is a mid-sized passenger airport with an outsized footprint on global aviation because it sits directly beside UPS Worldport, the company's all-points international air hub and one of the largest package-sorting facilities on earth. That adjacency makes SDF one of the top cargo airports in the world by tonnage, consistently ranking in the global top 10 and frequently as the busiest cargo airport in the United States after Memphis. The passenger side is modest by comparison: a single terminal with two concourses serves roughly 4.3M travelers a year across 27 airlines, with the Delta, American, Southwest, and United networks providing the bulk of domestic feed to their respective hubs. But the cargo operation is what defines the site. UPS bases more than 300 aircraft at Worldport and sorts upward of 400,000 packages per hour during overnight banks, using 70 miles (113 km) of conveyors. Three concrete runways support the 24-hour tempo, including an 11,887 ft (3,623 m) primary strip (17R/35L) capable of handling fully loaded 747-8F and MD-11F departures to Asia and Europe. Geographically the airport sits at 501 ft (153 m) elevation just south of downtown Louisville, a central US position that allows UPS to reach most of North America with a single overnight hop — the same logic that made Memphis work for FedEx. Named in 2019 for boxing champion and native son Muhammad Ali, SDF handles 187 scheduled routes to 126 destinations. International passenger service is limited, but cargo links tie Louisville directly to Cologne, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Anchorage, and Latin American freight gateways.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Louisville

Public transportation

Public transit is provided by the Transit Authority of River City (TARC). Route 2 (Second Street) runs from the arrivals-level stop on island 3 directly to downtown Louisville, with service seven days a week. The ride into the city center takes roughly 25 minutes and costs well under $2, making it the cheapest option for reaching downtown hotels and the convention district.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxi services including Ready Cab and Yellow Cab queue on the lower level outside baggage claim; no reservation is required. Fares to downtown Louisville run approximately $20–$25 for a 10–15 minute trip. Uber and Lyft operate from clearly marked zones on the same lower-level curb and are usually available within a few minutes given the airport's proximity to the city.

Rental cars

The rental car facility sits on the lower level of the terminal itself, with counters for Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and National located inside the baggage claim area. Vehicles are parked in the attached garage, so customers walk directly from the counter to their car without shuttle transfers — one of the shortest terminal-to-car paths of any major US airport.
