Marrakech Menara Airport is Morocco's second-busiest airport after Casablanca and the principal international gateway for the country's largest tourism market, handling roughly 7.5M passengers (2024) across 191 weekly routes to 113 destinations on 54 airlines — the highest number of airlines of any airport in Morocco and one of the broadest carrier rosters in North Africa. RAK sits 3 km (2 mi) southwest of Marrakech's medina at the edge of the Menara gardens, closer to its city center than almost any other major international airport in the Arab world. The airport functions as a leisure-dominated destination facility rather than a connecting hub, with the vast majority of traffic composed of point-to-point European holiday travel. Ryanair, Royal Air Maroc, easyJet, Transavia, Air Arabia Maroc, and Wizz Air operate the densest networks, and Marrakech has become one of the largest single-city markets in Europe's low-cost carrier networks — routes run to virtually every major European city plus regional North African capitals. The terminal complex (T1 and T2) has been progressively expanded since 2008 to accommodate the Moroccan government's Vision 2020 and Vision 2030 tourism strategies, which have roughly tripled the country's inbound visitor numbers over two decades. A single 10,170 ft (3,100 m) runway handles all traffic, with a planned second parallel runway included in the 2030 masterplan. RAK sits at 1,545 ft (471 m) elevation on the Haouz plain at the foot of the High Atlas mountains, an altitude high enough to affect performance on the hottest summer days when ambient temperatures regularly exceed 40°C (104°F). International reach is concentrated on Europe (France, UK, Spain, Italy, Germany are all top markets) with secondary service to Gulf, West African, and Eastern European destinations that cater to both tourism and the Moroccan diaspora.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Marrakech

Public transportation

The ALSA Airport Bus (Route 19) is the most economical option, running every 20–30 minutes from just outside the terminal to Djemaa el-Fna (the main square of the medina), Gueliz (the modern downtown), and Marrakech main train station (Gare de Marrakech). A single ride costs 30 MAD and the journey takes 20–30 minutes. The bus is wheelchair-accessible and takes luggage without additional charge.

Taxis & rideshare

Official Grands Taxis (large beige or cream Mercedes saloons) queue at the designated rank outside the arrivals terminal around the clock. Fares are notionally fixed and displayed on a board inside the terminal — typically 100–150 MAD to the medina zone — but drivers frequently quote higher prices, so confirming the rate before boarding is essential. Petit Taxis (small red cars) are not permitted to pick up at the airport but may drop off.

Rental cars

Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, and a large number of local Moroccan operators have desks in the arrivals hall. Advance booking is strongly recommended during European school holidays and the October–April peak season. An International Driving Permit is required alongside the home-country license. Many visitors opt for chauffeur-driven rentals given Marrakech's dense medina traffic and unfamiliar road layout.
