Yangon International is the primary international airport of Myanmar and historically the country's dominant commercial aviation gateway, located 15 km north of the former capital (renamed from Rangoon in 1989). It is Myanmar's main point of entry for foreign arrivals, UN and diplomatic traffic, and international business into the country's largest commercial center — a role complicated since the February 2021 military coup by sanctions, airline withdrawals, and suspended operations by most Western carriers. The airport operates a single 3,414 m (11,200 ft) asphalt runway and three terminal buildings: T1 for international, T2 for some international and domestic flights, and T3 for domestic. Approximately 80 routes to 43 destinations are served by 16 airlines, a substantially reduced network from the pre-2021 peak. Current international capacity is dominated by regional carriers — Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, AirAsia, Vietnam Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Singapore Airlines, and Qatar Airways maintain services alongside Myanmar Airways International and Myanmar National Airlines. Most European and US carriers suspended operations following the coup and show no signs of return. RGN's importance is structural rather than current-volume: it is the only airport in Myanmar with widebody-capable infrastructure and full international customs and immigration facilities at scale, and it anchors the country's connection to the ASEAN aviation network. A $170M terminal expansion completed in 2016 raised capacity to 20M passengers, although actual throughput has remained well below that — roughly 3–4M annually in recent years — reflecting the compressed economic and travel environment. The airport also serves as a staging point for UN humanitarian operations into Myanmar's conflict zones.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Yangon

Public transportation

Yangon Bus Service (YBS) operates dedicated airport shuttle routes connecting RGN to central Yangon and the Central Railway Station. Fares are low (a few hundred kyat) and the bus stop sits outside Arrivals. Services are more frequent by Yangon standards but remain slow and crowded; the option suits budget travelers with light luggage only. No rail link serves the airport directly.

Taxis & rideshare

Fixed-price taxi counters inside the Arrivals hall are the recommended method to avoid fare negotiation — a common practice at Yangon's curbside. A ride to downtown Yangon typically costs 12,000–18,000 MMK and takes 30–45 minutes depending on traffic on Pyay Road. Grab operates in Yangon and serves the airport from designated pickup points; it is generally cheaper and more transparent than curbside taxis.

Rental cars

Avis, Yoma Fleet, and local operators maintain desks at the airport. Self-drive is uncommon for foreign visitors — Myanmar's road network, left-side signage legacy, and fuel logistics make a driver-hire the practical standard. An International Driving Permit is required for self-drive, and many rental firms restrict routes available to foreign self-drivers. Driver-plus-car arrangements typically cost $60–$100 per day.
