Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) is the highest-elevation airport in China's top-ten ranking and the country's principal gateway to mainland Southeast Asia. Sitting at 6,903 ft (2,104 m) on the Yunnan plateau 24 km (15 mi) northeast of central Kunming, it is the largest airport in southwestern China and the CAAC-designated hub for services to Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The airport handled 47.4M passengers in 2024, restoring its position in the mainland top ten and confirming its role as China Eastern Airlines' Yunnan hub. KMG replaced the 1923-vintage Wujiaba Airport in June 2012 and was built from the outset at a scale matching Kunming's role as the terminus of the Burma Road, the historical Stilwell Road, and modern Belt and Road corridors into mainland Southeast Asia. The single 850,000 sq m terminal — the fifth-largest single-roof airport terminal in the world at its opening — is served by two parallel runways (03/21 and 04/22, both 13,451 ft) with a third strip opened in 2020 and a fourth under construction as part of a Phase II expansion targeting 120M passengers by 2035. KMG's high-elevation field elevation requires specific aircraft performance planning: takeoff weights are routinely restricted in summer, and dedicated high-elevation approach procedures have been developed for operations into Lhasa, Shangri-La, and Diqing from Kunming. The airport is a critical node in the China-Laos Railway corridor, with the Mohan border crossing reachable by high-speed rail in under four hours. China Eastern operates Kunming–Vientiane, Kunming–Yangon, and Kunming–Dhaka routes with frequencies unmatched by any other Chinese carrier.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Kunming

Public transportation

Kunming Metro Line 6 runs every 8 minutes from the airport to Dongfeng Square in central Kunming in 30 minutes for CNY 5. The Kunming Airport Intercity Rail links KMG to Kunming South high-speed rail station in 18 minutes, providing onward connections across the China-Laos Railway to Xishuangbanna and Vientiane. Airport express coaches serve seven routes across Yunnan including Dali, Lijiang, and Honghe.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue at the arrivals forecourt of the main terminal with CNY 13 flagfall plus CNY 2.30 per kilometre. A typical fare to central Kunming (Green Lake, North Station) is CNY 90–120 with a 40-minute runtime via the Airport Expressway. Didi Chuxing is the dominant ride-hail operator, collecting from the P2 parking level in the dedicated e-hail zone.

Rental cars

Self-drive rental requires a Chinese driving licence. eHi, CAR Inc, and Shouqi operate counters in the arrivals hall with vehicles delivered from the off-site lot to the P3 pick-up zone. Chauffeur-driven private-car rental, booked via Didi's premium tier or hotel concierge, is the default product for foreign visitors and typical for touring the Yunnan highland route.
