Kuala Lumpur International is Malaysia's principal gateway and one of Southeast Asia's four mega-hubs, handling 47.1M passengers (2024) across 148 destinations on 80 airlines. Built on a 25,000-acre (10,117 ha) site in Sepang — one of the largest airport footprints in the world — KUL was designed by Kisho Kurokawa as an "airport in the forest, forest in the airport," with tropical rainforest preserved inside the Satellite Terminal's atrium. The airport operates on a twin-terminal model split between KLIA (Terminal 1, home to Malaysia Airlines and full-service carriers) and klia2 (Terminal 2, the world's largest purpose-built low-cost terminal and the global hub of AirAsia and AirAsia X). This division has given KUL a dual identity — Star Alliance gateway on one side, Asia's largest LCC operation on the other — with combined aircraft movements placing it among the top 25 airports worldwide by traffic. Three parallel runways (13,530 ft / 4,124 m, 13,288 ft / 4,050 m, and 12,993 ft / 3,960 m) accommodate simultaneous independent approaches. KUL sits at 69 ft (21 m) elevation and serves as the principal transit point between Oceania and Europe for AirAsia X's long-haul LCC model, as well as a significant feeder for Middle East carriers routing Asian traffic through Dubai and Doha. Malaysia Airlines anchors the oneworld footprint here with long-haul service to London, Jeddah, Tokyo, and Sydney. A third terminal and a fourth runway are planned under the "KLIA Aerotropolis" masterplan targeting 150M annual capacity by the late 2030s.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Sepang

Public transportation

The KLIA Ekspres is Southeast Asia's fastest airport rail link, covering the 57 km to KL Sentral in 28 minutes nonstop for RM 55, with trains every 15–20 minutes from 05:00 to 01:00. The slower KLIA Transit follows the same line with three intermediate stops for RM 41 in 36 minutes. Airport coach services (Aerobus, Airport Coach) depart ground-floor bays of both terminals to KL Sentral, Genting Highlands, and major hotels for RM 12–15.

Taxis & rideshare

Prepaid Airport Limo coupons are sold at official counters in the arrivals hall — fixed-fare options include Budget, Premier, and Family cars, with central KL typically RM 75–120. Metered taxis queue at designated stands but are less common post-Grab. Ride-hailing (Grab, Bolt) is widely used with dedicated pickup zones on Level 1 of KLIA and Level 3 of klia2.

Rental cars

Counters for Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Hawk Rent A Car, Orix, and Mayflower are located in the arrivals halls of both KLIA and klia2. Vehicles are picked up on-site from adjacent short-term car parks. An International Driving Permit is required for most foreign license holders, and pre-booking is standard given the distance (57 km) from downtown returns.
