Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) is the primary commercial airport of the Georgia Lowcountry and the South Carolina coastal resort belt, jointly serving historic Savannah and the Hilton Head Island resort market of roughly 1.2 million residents and more than 14 million annual leisure visitors. SAV has been one of the fastest-growing mid-sized airports in the United States for a decade, with passenger volumes climbing above 3.5 million per year and repeatedly setting all-time records. It is operated by the Savannah Airport Commission under the City of Savannah. The airport occupies roughly 3,700 ha (9,100 acres) in unincorporated Chatham County about 11 km (7 mi) northwest of downtown Savannah, at an elevation of 50 ft (15 m). Two intersecting concrete runways — 10/28 at 9,351 ft (2,850 m) and 01/19 at 7,002 ft (2,134 m) — share the field with Air National Guard operations by the 165th Airlift Wing flying the Lockheed C-130. The single terminal, opened in 1994 and progressively extended since 2019, features 16 gates and is in the middle of a multi-phase expansion that will add a sixth concourse and doubled security and baggage capacity. Twenty-five airlines link SAV to 72 nonstop destinations, with Delta, American, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Allegiant and Breeze providing the densest networks to the U.S. East Coast, Midwest and sunbelt, plus seasonal Caribbean service. Sun Country, Avelo and Spirit have expanded the leisure footprint in recent schedules. SAV's combination of UNESCO-tier historic tourism in Savannah, high-end resort traffic to Hilton Head and Tybee Island, and accelerating logistics demand from the Port of Savannah — the fourth-busiest container port in the U.S. — underpins its outsized position in its size class (2025).

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Savannah

Public transportation

Chatham Area Transit (CAT) operates the 100X Airport Express, a dedicated bus route linking the terminal directly to the Joe Murray Rivers, Jr. Intermodal Transit Center in downtown Savannah for a 5 USD one-way fare. Buses run roughly hourly from early morning through mid-evening; exact change or a CAT mobile-ticket purchase is required. Private shared-van shuttles from Low Country Adventures, Concierge Coach and hotel operators provide pre-booked service to Hilton Head Island, Tybee Island and the Golden Isles.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue at the lower-level curb just outside baggage claim and operate 24/7. A standard fare to downtown Savannah is around 30 USD and to Hilton Head Island about 90 USD. Uber and Lyft maintain a signposted pickup zone on the same curb, typically 10 to 20 percent cheaper for shorter trips. All taxis accept major credit cards.

Rental cars

An on-site Rental Car Center adjacent to the terminal houses Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty under one roof, with a two-minute walk from baggage claim to the counter and ready lot. On-airport pickup makes SAV one of the easier southeastern U.S. airports for self-drive itineraries toward Charleston, St Augustine or the Golden Isles. Advance booking is strongly advised during spring break and the October–April peak.
