Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) is the principal commercial airport of northeastern Florida and southeastern Georgia, serving Jacksonville — the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States — and a combined catchment of more than 1.8 million people. JAX consistently ranks among the 50 busiest U.S. airports by passenger volume, handling around 7 million passengers annually and setting record traffic numbers throughout the mid-2020s driven by the Jacksonville metro's population and logistics boom. The airport is owned and operated by the Jacksonville Aviation Authority. JAX sits on a 2,300-ha (5,700-acre) site about 21 km (13 mi) north of downtown Jacksonville, at an elevation of 30 ft (9 m). Two intersecting concrete runways — 08/26 at 10,000 ft (3,048 m) and 14/32 at 7,701 ft (2,347 m) — handle all commercial traffic and were reinforced in 2024 with major rehabilitation work to extend life to 2050. The single passenger terminal houses two concourses with 25 gates; a new concourse and expanded TSA checkpoint announced by the JAA in 2023 will lift capacity above 10 million passengers a year. Twenty airlines link JAX to 69 nonstop destinations, with American, Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Frontier, Spirit and Allegiant providing the densest networks to the U.S. East Coast, Midwest and sunbelt, plus year-round Caribbean service to Nassau, San Juan and Montego Bay. Regional nonstops to multiple Canadian gateways round out a schedule that has grown more international since 2022. JAX's combination of U.S. Navy Jacksonville overflight coordination, the massive JAXPORT container complex and the rapidly expanding Northeast Florida population keeps the airport strategically important well beyond its mid-tier passenger ranking (2025).

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Jacksonville

Public transportation

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) operates the Route 1 JAX Airport Express bus directly between the terminal and downtown Jacksonville, with intermediate stops at major medical and retail nodes. Route CT3 connects into the wider Northside bus network. Buses depart from the lower-level curb outside baggage claim; fares are 1.75 USD one-way and accept cash, the JTA MyRide mobile app or contactless bank cards. Service frequency is lower evenings and weekends, so flight arrival times should be checked against the JTA schedule.

Taxis & rideshare

A 24/7 taxi stand on the lower level outside baggage claim is operated primarily by Gator City Taxi on a metered basis, with fares to downtown typically 40 to 50 USD. Uber and Lyft have a clearly signposted rideshare pickup zone at the same curb, usually 10 to 20 percent cheaper than a metered taxi. All operators accept credit cards; wheelchair-accessible vehicles can be booked on request.

Rental cars

Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty all operate counters on the lower level of the terminal adjacent to baggage claim, with vehicles pre-positioned in the connected short-term parking garage. On-airport pickup makes JAX one of the easier southeastern U.S. airports for self-drive itineraries toward St Augustine, Amelia Island, the Golden Isles of Georgia or Orlando. Loyalty members of most brands can skip the counter entirely.
