Syracuse Hancock International is the primary commercial airport for Central New York and the Finger Lakes region, serving a catchment of approximately 1.5M residents across the Syracuse, Utica, Rome, and Watertown metropolitan areas. It is the closest commercial airport to Fort Drum — the Army's 10th Mountain Division base — and to the SUNY campuses at Syracuse, Cornell (Ithaca), and Colgate, which together drive significant year-round and academic-calendar traffic. The airport's historical importance is also military: it was originally built during World War II as Hancock Field, and it still hosts the New York Air National Guard's 174th Attack Wing operating MQ-9 Reapers. Two runways — the primary at 9,013 ft (2,747 m) — handle roughly 81 routes to 48 destinations across 23 airlines. American, Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue, Spirit, Allegiant, Breeze, and Frontier all operate scheduled services, a fuller carrier mix than many US cities of comparable size, reflecting competitive pressure from Southwest's 2021 entry. The route network is overwhelmingly domestic and focused on the East Coast and Southeast, with seasonal service to Florida and the Caribbean; there are no scheduled transatlantic or transcontinental nonstop flights. The single consolidated terminal has two concourses (A and B) connected by a central hall, and underwent a $62M modernization completed in 2018 that added a new security checkpoint, concourse connector, and pre-security retail. Syracuse moved approximately 2.3M passengers in 2023, slightly above the pre-pandemic baseline; a new international arrivals facility opened in 2019 to support charter and potential scheduled international services, though transborder Canada flights have been limited.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Syracuse

Public transportation

Centro Route 110 connects the airport to the William F. Walsh Regional Transportation Center in downtown Syracuse — the hub for local buses, Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited and Maple Leaf, and Greyhound and Trailways intercity coaches. Buses run roughly hourly with a one-way fare of $2. The stop is on the lower level outside Terminal A.

Taxis & rideshare

Syracuse Regional Taxi maintains a 24/7 rank on the terminal's first level outside baggage claim. Uber and Lyft also operate from designated rideshare zones in the same area. A ride to downtown Syracuse (about 10 km) typically costs $25–$30 and takes 12–15 minutes via I-81 South.

Rental cars

Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and National operate counters on the first level of the main terminal directly across from baggage claim, with vehicles picked up in the attached parking garage. Dollar, Thrifty, and Sixt are available via off-site shuttle. Winter rentals between November and March should include AWD or snow-tire-equipped vehicles given the region's extreme lake-effect snow.
