Birjand International Airport (XBJ) serves the eastern Iranian city of Birjand, capital of South Khorasan province, from a plateau site at 4,952 ft (1,510 m) near the Afghan border. Despite the city's modest population, the airport holds international status because of its role as a border-region gateway and as one of the nearest Iranian civil fields to Herat, Farah and western Afghanistan, functions that have repeatedly brought it diplomatic, humanitarian and logistical traffic disproportionate to its size. The airport operates a long runway engineered for hot-and-high conditions, allowing sustained narrow-body jet operations by Iran Air, Mahan Air, Iran Aseman and other domestic carriers on daily services to Tehran Mehrabad (THR), Mashhad (MHD) and seasonal flights to Isfahan (IFN) and Kish (KIH). International connectivity has included scheduled and charter links to the Gulf states and, during multiple refugee emergencies, humanitarian air bridges. XBJ's strategic importance within Iranian aviation is reinforced by its role as a reliever for Mashhad when weather or pilgrimage loads saturate the larger airport, and by its proximity to South Khorasan's barberry, saffron and mining economies, which generate business-travel demand. On regional league tables the airport ranks among the larger provincial Iranian fields by runway length and scheduled service, operating as the aviation anchor for a thinly populated but geopolitically sensitive stretch of the Iran-Afghanistan frontier.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Birjand

Public transportation

Urban bus services run by the Birjand municipality connect the airport area with the city centre and intercity bus terminal along the main southern corridor, though frequencies outside peak hours are limited. Shared taxis, known locally as savaris, operate more flexibly between the terminal forecourt and central Birjand, charging fixed per-seat fares in Iranian rials.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered and pre-paid private taxis wait at arrivals, with a dispatch desk in the terminal that issues tickets for trips into Birjand, the provincial government quarter and major hotels. Longer runs toward Qayen or the Afghan border are arranged by direct negotiation; foreign visitors should carry cash in rials or Iranian toman equivalents.

Rental cars

Self-drive rental is uncommon at XBJ by international standards; a handful of Iranian agencies offer vehicles with a driver rather than pure self-hire, and many travellers instead charter a car-and-driver package through their hotel. Foreign licences are not always recognised for self-drive in Iran, so hired-driver arrangements remain the practical norm.
