Ashgabat International is the principal gateway to Turkmenistan and one of Central Asia's most architecturally distinctive airports, built in the shape of a stylised falcon with a wingspan of roughly 700 m. The US$2.3 billion complex, opened in 2016, replaced the Soviet-era terminal and brought a nameplate capacity of 14M passengers — far in excess of current throughput — but it is the twin parallel runways of 3,800 m (12,467 ft) each, both capable of independent widebody operations, that are the operationally decisive feature and the reason ASB ranks among the 534 largest airports by infrastructure. Traffic is tightly state-managed. About 5 airlines operate 27 routes to 25 destinations (2026), with flag carrier Turkmenistan Airlines providing the bulk of service via its Boeing 737 and 777 fleets to Moscow, Istanbul, Dubai, Bangkok, Delhi, Beijing, Frankfurt, London, and Almaty, supplemented by Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, flydubai, and S7. Transit visa rules and limited inbound tourism keep passenger volumes modest in absolute terms. The terminal houses a separate VIP pavilion for government movements, a 1,600-room adjoining hotel cluster, and a cargo complex sized for trans-Caspian freighter operations — all reflecting the airport's design intent as a Silk Road transit node between Europe, the Gulf, and East Asia. ASB is also Turkmenistan's sole widebody-capable commercial airport and the designated alternate for Turkmenbashi and Mary, which makes its runway redundancy a matter of national aviation redundancy rather than mere airport-scale design.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Ashgabat

Public transportation

City bus routes, notably lines 1 and 22, serve the airport area and are the most economical option. Route information and signage are predominantly in Turkmen, which makes them challenging for first-time visitors. Most business and tourist travelers use pre-arranged transfers instead.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxis queue outside arrivals. Fares are paid in Turkmenistan manat (TMT) and must be agreed before departure since meters are seldom used. Pre-booked hotel transfers or transport arranged through an accredited tour operator are the standard practice for foreign visitors.

Rental cars

Self-drive rental from major international brands is not available in Turkmenistan. Visitors travel by car-with-driver, booked in advance through a government-accredited tour operator or hotel. Independent road travel outside Ashgabat generally requires specific route permits.
