Shiraz Shahid Dastghaib International Airport is the principal airport of southern Iran and one of the country's busiest regional gateways, serving Shiraz — the capital of Fars Province and the ancient Persian heartland surrounding Persepolis and Pasargadae. SYZ handles 41 scheduled routes to 23 nonstop destinations operated by 17 airlines and sits at a substantial 4,927 ft (1,501 m) elevation on the Iranian plateau, high enough to impose hot-and-high performance penalties in summer departures. The airport's most distinctive physical asset is its pair of exceptionally long parallel runways: 11L/29R at 14,345 ft (4,372 m) and 11R/29L at 14,051 ft (4,282 m). Both strips are among the longest in Asia outside the Gulf and reflect the airport's dual civil-military role and its suitability as a strategic diversion field. Operationally, Iran Air, Mahan Air, Iran Aseman, Kish Air, and Qeshm Air dominate domestic service to Tehran (Mehrabad and Imam Khomeini), Mashhad, and Isfahan, with international departures focused on Dubai, Muscat, Doha, Istanbul, Najaf, and seasonal Hajj/Umrah rotations to Medina. International significance is tied to Shiraz's status as Iran's second-leading domestic tourism destination after Isfahan, and its UNESCO-inscribed monumental heritage at Persepolis (50 km / 31 mi northeast) and Pasargadae. The terminal, progressively expanded since its 1974 reconstruction, includes a separate Hajj concourse to handle peak pilgrim charter traffic. U.S., UK, and EU sanctions limit the airport's direct connectivity westward, but Gulf and Turkish carriers preserve single-stop routing to most global destinations. Shiraz was the first airport in Iran to integrate directly with an operational urban-metro line, with Shahid Dastgheib station on Line 1 opening in 2017.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Shiraz

Public transportation

Shiraz Metro Line 1 terminates beneath the terminal at Shahid Dastgheib Airport station, running every 6–10 minutes to the city centre (Valiasr and Namazi stations) in roughly 20 minutes for IRR 25,000. City bus route 71 supplements the metro and runs to Azadi Square. Both accept the rechargeable Shahrvand smartcard available at station kiosks.

Taxis & rideshare

Yellow and green official airport taxis queue outside arrivals 24/7. Negotiated fares to central Shiraz (11 km / 6.8 mi) run IRR 400,000–700,000 off-peak. Iranian ride-hailing apps Snapp and Tapsi dominate local transport and post-fare transparently in rial; both accept in-app card registration for foreign-issued credit cards, though sanctions-era payment volatility means cash (Iranian rials) remains the reliable settlement method at the airport.

Rental cars

Several Iranian rental agencies operate counters in the arrivals hall; international brands are not present due to sanctions. Rentals require a passport, an International Driving Permit, and typically a cash deposit in IRR or USD. Most foreign visitors opt for a chauffeur-driven car through a licensed tour operator, which combines driving with the permit and guide arrangements required to visit Persepolis, Pasargadae, and Naqsh-e Rostam.
