Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the flag hub of Switzerland and, despite serving a country of 8.8 million, regularly ranks in Europe's top fifteen airports by passenger volume. Sited on the Kloten plain 12 km (7.5 mi) north of the city at 1,417 ft (432 m) elevation, it handled 31.5M passengers in 2024 — a post-pandemic record — and consistently appears in Skytrax's global top ten for passenger experience. The airport's three-runway layout (10/28 at 8,202 ft, 14/32 at 10,827 ft, 16/34 at 12,139 ft) interleaves intersecting operations under one of Europe's tightest noise-abatement regimes, constraining movements to 66 per hour and forcing precision in slot allocation. SWISS International Air Lines, the Lufthansa Group's premium brand, bases its entire fleet here and operates long-haul widebodies to more than 20 intercontinental destinations. Partner carrier Edelweiss Air adds leisure long-haul density to the Caribbean, East Africa, and the Indian Ocean. Star Alliance transfers are concentrated in Dock E, the airport's satellite terminal reached via the Skymetro — an underground cable-hauled people mover that crosses beneath an active runway, one of only a handful of such systems in the world. ZRH's commercial character is defined by high-yield business traffic. It posts some of the highest average ticket prices in Europe, supports a dedicated general-aviation terminal for executive jets, and hosts a customs-bonded watch and precious-metals trading zone. A CHF 2.5 billion 'ZRH 2032' masterplan will rebuild the landside forecourt, extend Dock A, and integrate the airport station into the new SBB Brüttener Tunnel, shaving 12 minutes off Zurich-to-St. Gallen journey times through the airport.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Zurich

Public transportation

The airport railway station sits directly beneath Terminal 1 and is the busiest non-city-centre station in Switzerland. Trains to Zurich Hauptbahnhof run every 5 to 10 minutes, take 9 to 13 minutes, and cost CHF 7.00 (second class). Direct InterCity services reach Basel, Bern, Lucerne, and Winterthur without changing, and international Eurocity trains to Munich and Stuttgart depart daily. Trams 10 and 12 of the VBZ network link the airport to Zurich Oerlikon and the city's tram grid.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxi ranks are located at the Tram Station exit of the arrivals hall, with dispatched metering. The flagfall is CHF 6.00 plus CHF 3.80 per kilometre; a typical fare to central Zurich is CHF 60–80 with a runtime of 20–30 minutes via the A51. Uber operates in the region and typically quotes CHF 45–60 for the same trip. Limousine operators queue in a separate lane and serve the banking district on pre-booked flat rates.

Rental cars

The Rental Car Center is on level 1 of Parkhaus 2, reached via a 5-minute walk from arrivals through the Airport Shopping centre. Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, and Enterprise operate staffed counters with pick-up in the adjacent multi-storey. Autobahn A1 and A51 are accessed within two minutes of exit, placing Zurich, Winterthur, and the German and Liechtenstein borders within 30 to 60 minutes of drive time.
