Copenhagen Airport is the largest and busiest airport in the Nordic region, serving 80 airlines on 457 routes to 170 nonstop destinations and consistently ranking as the most punctual major airport in Europe — a positioning the airport actively promotes in its ACI-benchmarked operational reporting. CPH sits on the island of Amager just 8 km (5 mi) southeast of central Copenhagen, a proximity that makes it one of the closest-to-city-center major international airports in Europe, with elevation of just 17 ft (5 m) above the Øresund strait. SAS Scandinavian Airlines operates its largest hub here, and CPH functions as the principal Nordic gateway for Star Alliance's intercontinental network to the region. The airport also serves as the launching point for SAS's trans-atlantic services and a key transfer hub between continental Europe, the Nordics, and the Baltic states. The terminal complex is compact and highly walkable, organized around three piers (A, B, C) branching from a central check-in hall. CPH is unusually retail-dense for its size; the landside shopping zone, reminiscent of a Scandinavian pedestrian street, is often cited as a model for airport commercial programming. CPH is also the southern terminus of the Øresund Bridge rail-and-road link between Denmark and Sweden, giving the airport a direct high-speed rail connection to Malmö (22 minutes) — a rare case of an airport being a dual-country regional transit hub.
