Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International — named for the first president of Côte d'Ivoire — is the principal airport of Abidjan, the country's economic capital and one of francophone West Africa's two dominant commercial hubs alongside Dakar. Côte d'Ivoire is the world's largest cocoa producer and a major exporter of cashew, coffee, rubber, and palm products; ABJ handles virtually all the country's air-freighted high-value produce and is the main point of entry for the Abidjan expatriate business community tied to those commodity trades. A single 3,000 m (9,843 ft) asphalt runway supports approximately 77 routes to 41 destinations across 26 airlines. Air Côte d'Ivoire, the national carrier relaunched in 2012 with HNA Group and French government support, operates its hub here with a regional narrowbody fleet serving West and Central African capitals. Air France is the historical mainline carrier, operating multiple daily Paris services and representing one of the largest European presences in sub-Saharan Africa by frequency. Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, Turkish Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Brussels Airlines, Emirates, and Qatar Airways provide substantial long-haul and connecting capacity; KLM and Delta offer seasonal and codeshare services. The airport sits at Port-Bouët, 16 km southeast of central Abidjan on the coast, and serves approximately 2.5M passengers annually in a post-pandemic recovery that has outpaced much of West Africa. It is a dual civil/military facility hosting the Ivorian Air Force and historically was an important staging point for French military operations in the region (the 43rd BIMA base operated alongside until 2014). ABJ is one of four African airports in the ACI WORLD annual Best Airport in Africa by region rankings.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Abidjan

Public transportation

SOTRA city bus Line 6 connects the airport to Le Plateau — Abidjan's central business district — via the Félix-Houphouët-Boigny Bridge. The fare is low but the bus is often crowded and not well-suited for luggage. No metro serves Abidjan yet, though the long-planned Abidjan Metro Line 1 is under phased construction. Some hotels offer free shuttles with advance booking.

Taxis & rideshare

Orange metered taxis wait 24/7 outside Arrivals. Meter use is inconsistent — confirm the fare before departure; a typical ride to Le Plateau or Cocody runs 5,000–10,000 XOF (roughly 8–17 EUR). Yango and Uber operate in Abidjan with airport coverage and provide upfront pricing, often working out 20–40% cheaper than orange-cab fares for foreign visitors.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Europcar, and several local operators maintain counters inside the Arrivals terminal. Self-drive is uncommon for most visitors due to dense traffic and informal road conditions; hiring a car with a driver is the norm. An International Driving Permit is typically required for self-drive rentals alongside a valid national license. Daily driver-and-car rates start around 35,000–50,000 XOF.
