Lomé–Tokoin International Airport — officially Gnassingbé Eyadéma International Airport — is the sole international airport of Togo and a disproportionately significant West African hub relative to the country's small population of 8.9 million. Serving 34 scheduled routes to 25 nonstop destinations operated by seven airlines, LFW punches well above its national passenger base because it is the primary hub of Asky Airlines, the pan-African regional carrier majority-owned by Ethiopian Airlines. The airport operates a single 9,847 ft (3,000 m) lighted asphalt runway 04/22 at 72 ft (22 m) elevation, 5 km (3.1 mi) north of central Lomé on the Gulf of Guinea coast. The 3,000 m strip supports Boeing 787, 777, and 737 MAX widebody and narrowbody operations, and Asky's Ethiopian-aligned fleet of Boeing 737NG and Dash 8 Q400 aircraft operates a radial network from Lomé connecting 25+ West and Central African capitals — a hub-and-spoke structure deliberately modelled on Addis Ababa's operation. Ethiopian Airlines provides the long-haul extension via a five-times-weekly tag to Addis Ababa and onward globally. Internationally significant as one of Africa's most structured regional hubs outside the continent's four largest carriers (Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, Royal Air Maroc, EgyptAir), with Lomé offering single-transfer service from francophone West Africa to North America (via Addis Ababa or Brussels) that previously required two or three connections. The current passenger terminal opened in 2016, replacing the earlier 1965-era building, and the airport was upgraded under a Chinese Exim Bank infrastructure loan. Brussels Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, Kenya Airways, Air France, Turkish Airlines, and Air Burkina round out the international carrier list.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Lomé

Public transportation

There is no scheduled urban bus or rail service linking the terminal to central Lomé. Informal shared minibuses and motorcycle taxis (zémidjans or 'zems') operate on the main access road but are not practical for travelers with luggage. Gozem, the pan-African ride-hailing app, is the most reliable smartphone-based alternative and offers app-metered pricing in CFA francs.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxis queue outside the arrivals terminal 24/7. Fares are unmetered — confirm the price with the driver before departure. Typical negotiated rates to central Lomé (5 km / 3.1 mi) run CFA 3,000–5,000 during the day and more at night. U.S. dollars and Euros may be accepted informally but CFA is strongly preferred.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, and local Togolese operators maintain service desks within the terminal; advance booking is strongly recommended given limited fleet availability. An International Driving Permit is required along with the home-country licence. Hiring a car with a driver is the prevailing choice for visiting business travelers; the coastal highway toward Ouidah and Cotonou (100 km / 62 mi east) is in good condition but border-crossing formalities take 30–60 minutes.
