Kotoka International Airport (ACC) is Ghana's flagship airport and one of West Africa's most important aviation gateways, serving a catchment of roughly 34 million Ghanaians plus heavy diaspora and business traffic. Located in the Airport Residential Area of Accra, 10 km (6 mi) north-east of the city centre at 205 ft (62 m) elevation, the airport's single 11,165-ft (3,402-m) asphalt runway 03/21 is one of the longest in the ECOWAS region and handles fully loaded Boeing 787, 777 and Airbus A350 traffic to Europe and North America. ACC serves 51 routes to 34 destinations on 27 airlines (2026) - a highly international airline mix that reflects the airport's unusual status as a regional hub. Non-stop long-haul partners include British Airways and Virgin Atlantic (London), KLM (Amsterdam), Delta and United (New York and Washington), Lufthansa (Frankfurt), Brussels Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian and South African Airways. The airport is named after General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a participant in Ghana's 1966 coup killed at the site in 1967, and has been continuously modernised since independence. Terminal 3, inaugurated in 2018, is a 45,000 sqm (484,000 sqft) facility with six jet bridges and capacity for 5 million passengers a year - triple the previous T2. Accra has outperformed most West African capitals in aviation recovery since 2020, and ACC is central to Ghana's ambition to serve as the continent's commercial-aviation anchor, with extensive cargo facilities supporting cocoa, fresh produce and Ghana's growing electronics re-export trade. ACC is operated by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) under a concession arrangement reviewed periodically by the Ministry of Transport. The airport houses the regional headquarters of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) and hosts Africa World Airlines and PassionAir as the primary domestic operators connecting to Kumasi, Tamale, Takoradi and Sunyani. Pre-pandemic traffic approached 3 million annual passengers.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Accra

Public transportation

Public transit from the terminal is limited. The main Accra 'tro-tro' minibus system does not enter the airport perimeter; travellers must walk to Airport Road to flag down buses heading to Circle, Tema Station or 37 Military Hospital. Fares are a flat 3-8 GHS cash. Most visitors favour taxis or rideshares over tro-tros with luggage.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered official airport taxis queue 24/7 outside Terminal 3 arrivals; a city-centre run typically takes 20-40 minutes and costs 80-150 GHS. Uber and Bolt are widely used, with app-based fares running 30-50% lower; the rideshare pickup point is in the adjacent short-term car park. Agree on the fare before boarding any unmarked car.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Europcar and local firms including Lentex and Ghana Car Rental operate desks in arrivals. Most visitors choose chauffeur-driven rentals because Accra traffic, roundabout patterns and informal road markings can be challenging for first-time drivers. An International Driving Permit is required in addition to the home licence for self-drive rentals.
