Lungi International Airport (also Freetown International) is the principal international airport of Sierra Leone, serving the capital Freetown from an unusually complicated position on the opposite (north) shore of the Sierra Leone River estuary from the city it serves. Located near Lungi Town at just 84 ft (26 m) elevation, FNA is effectively unreachable from Freetown by direct road; passengers must complete a water crossing by ferry, water-taxi, or (formerly) helicopter to reach central Freetown, making it one of the most distinctive ground-transfer airports in the world. Proposals for a road bridge across the estuary or the construction of a replacement airport at Mamamah on the Freetown side have been debated for decades without resolution. The airport handles 12 routes across 7 destinations through 7 airlines. No carrier bases a hub here. Brussels Airlines provides the flagship European long-haul link (often via Monrovia), ASKY Airlines connects to Lomé, Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca, Air Côte d'Ivoire via Abidjan, and Kenya Airways via Accra and Nairobi. The route network mirrors that of similarly-sized West African capitals and is heavily oriented toward Brussels, Casablanca, and the Lomé and Abidjan hubs that provide onward continental coverage. A new terminal funded by Chinese investment opened in 2023, materially modernizing the arriving-passenger experience. The single asphalt runway 12/30 measures 10,498 ft (3,200 m), adequate for widebody operations including the Boeing 787s and Airbus A330s that operate the long-haul European links. The airport is operated by Sierra Leone Airports Authority under a concession arrangement. The pre-2023 terminal was regularly cited as one of the most congested in West Africa; the new facility has a declared annual capacity of roughly 1.5 million passengers and is intended to support traffic growth following the post-Ebola, post-civil-war recovery of Sierra Leonean aviation demand.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Freetown (Lungi-Town)

Public transportation

No direct public bus or rail service operates from Lungi airport. The onward connection to Freetown is by water, and most travelers use the private water-taxi services (Sea Coach Express, Sea Bird Express) that typically include a short shuttle bus from the terminal to their private jetties followed by a 30 to 40 minute fast-boat crossing to Freetown's Aberdeen or Lumley jetty.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis at the airport primarily serve the short leg to the ferry or water-taxi terminals rather than the full journey to Freetown. Fares are negotiated and must be agreed before departure. Combined ticket products are sold by some water-taxi operators that bundle the land transfer, boat crossing, and onward Freetown transport.

Rental cars

Major international rental brands have very limited presence; most hire is arranged through local operators and typically includes a chauffeur. Taking a rental car across to Freetown requires use of the public vehicle ferry, which can be a very lengthy process; most visitors rent on the Freetown side instead.
