Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo is the principal airport of the Portuguese autonomous region of Madeira, located on the south coast of the island at Santa Cruz approximately 10 mi (16 km) east of central Funchal. Formally renamed in 2017 after the Madeira-born footballer, FNC is one of the most operationally challenging commercial airports in Europe and a classic case study in aviation training. The airport handles 126 routes to 74 destinations operated by 41 airlines — a very high destination and carrier count for an island airport of its modest physical size and a direct reflection of Madeira's dominant role as a year-round subtropical Atlantic resort market drawing from across Europe. No hub operation exists at FNC; the route network is shaped by Portuguese and pan-European leisure flows. TAP Air Portugal operates as the leading carrier with substantial daily Lisbon and Porto frequencies, supplemented by SATA Azores Airlines (inter-Atlantic archipelago service), easyJet, Ryanair, Transavia, TUI Airways, Jet2.com, British Airways, Binter Canarias (for the Canary Islands link), Lufthansa, Eurowings, Condor, KLM, Air France, Finnair, Norwegian, Wizz Air, and a long contingent of Nordic and Central European charter operators. The network concentrates on the UK, Germany, the Benelux, Scandinavia, and mainland Portugal. The airfield sits at 192 ft (58 m) elevation with a single 9,110 ft (2,777 m) asphalt runway, 05/23, memorably constructed on an artificial platform partially cantilevered over the Atlantic on 180 concrete pillars — an engineering solution adopted because the island's mountainous terrain offered no natural site for a long runway. The original 1964 runway was only 5,250 ft (1,600 m) and was extended over the sea in 2000 to its current length. Pilot certification for FNC operations is required by most European regulators because of the demanding offshore approach, frequent wind shear, mountain-wave turbulence, and the distinctive curved visual approach to Runway 05 that was historically required before the runway extension and approach redesign. FNC's engineering platform won the IABSE Outstanding Structure Award in 2004.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Funchal

Public transportation

The Aerobus (Line 53) — operated by Madeira bus company SAM — provides dedicated airport-shuttle service between the terminal and Funchal's hotel district and town center, running approximately every 60–90 min with a flat fare of approximately EUR 5. Local SAM line 113 offers a cheaper but less luggage-friendly alternative. Rodoeste, Horários do Funchal, and SAM public buses also serve the airport for travel to Machico, Caniço, and other eastern-Madeira towns, and onward transfers through Funchal reach the rest of the island. No rail service exists on Madeira.

Taxis & rideshare

Madeira's distinctive cream-and-yellow metered taxis queue at the rank directly outside the Arrivals hall on Level 0 with 24/7 service. Fares are regulated and a fixed-price table for common destinations is posted at the rank. Typical fares: EUR 25–35 to central Funchal (20–30 min), EUR 30–45 to Câmara de Lobos, EUR 15–25 to Caniço and Garajau, EUR 45–65 to Ponta do Sol, EUR 65–95 to Porto Moniz or São Vicente on the north coast. Supplements apply for luggage, Sundays, and nights. Uber and Bolt operate limitedly in Madeira.

Rental cars

Rental desks in arrivals include major international brands (Sixt, Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Budget, Enterprise) and strong local operators (Guerin, Madeira Rent, Rodavante, Ilha Verde, Luzcar). The rental lot is located in a dedicated car park close to the terminal. Madeira's mountainous interior, steep coastal roads, and dispersed villages make the island heavily rental-driven for tourism, and winter booking demand is particularly strong given the island's year-round mild climate. Advance reservation is recommended. Madeira's narrow mountain roads and the levadas-adjacent single-lane tunnels reward cautious driving.
