Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan International Airport (BPN) is the busiest airport on the Indonesian side of Borneo and the principal gateway to Indonesia's upstream oil-and-gas industry, centred on Balikpapan. Located 8 km (5 mi) east of Balikpapan on the Makassar Strait coast at 12 ft (4 m) elevation, the airport's single 8,202-ft (2,500-m) asphalt runway 07/25 handles narrowbody service plus regular widebody charter for offshore-industry rotations. BPN's strategic significance jumped in 2019 when Indonesia announced the relocation of its capital to Nusantara (IKN) in East Kalimantan, 120 km (75 mi) north of Balikpapan. The airport is currently the only long-haul-capable gateway to that project until the new IKN international airport opens, making BPN the de facto arrival point for the diplomats, contractors and state visitors supporting Southeast Asia's largest active greenfield urban development. The facility serves 51 routes to 22 destinations on 14 airlines (2026) - a large route count against a modest destination list, reflecting dense, frequent shuttles to Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Singapore operated by Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Lion Air, Batik Air, Super Air Jet and Scoot. A 2014 terminal modernisation by state airport operator Angkasa Pura I produced a distinctive glass-and-steel structure designed for a tropical climate, with capacity for 10 million annual passengers. Plans for a second runway and further expansion were paused in 2023 pending the progress of the IKN airport, which will ultimately relieve BPN of diplomatic and long-haul traffic while leaving it as the oil-industry and Balikpapan regional hub. The airport is named after Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman, the nineteenth sultan of Kutai Kartanegara. BPN's apron and fuel farm were designed with capacity for heavy-freighter operations supporting offshore platforms in the Makassar Strait, and the airport handles regular Airbus A330 and Boeing 767 ad-hoc charters contracted by Pertamina, Chevron and other East Kalimantan energy operators.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Balikpapan

Public transportation

DAMRI state-run buses depart the terminal forecourt to Terminal Damai (the central Balikpapan bus station), Pantai Manggar, Plaza Balikpapan and onward to Samarinda. Fares run 15,000-50,000 IDR paid to the conductor. Local angkot minibuses serving the city run from just outside the airport perimeter at lower fares.

Taxis & rideshare

Coupon-based official airport taxis are booked at a counter inside arrivals at fixed zonal prices - typically 120,000-170,000 IDR to central Balikpapan. Grab and Gojek have a dedicated pickup lounge directly outside arrivals; their fares are usually 30-40% cheaper. Both app platforms accept card and e-wallet payment.

Rental cars

TRAC Astra Rent a Car anchors the rental options in the arrivals hall, with local operators also represented. Both self-drive and chauffeur-driven (the default option for corporate visitors) are offered. Indonesian toll roads around Balikpapan accept the e-Toll card, which is typically pre-loaded into rental vehicles. An International Driving Permit is required for foreign self-drivers.
