Brunei International Airport is the sole international airport of Brunei Darussalam and the home base of Royal Brunei Airlines, the flag carrier of one of Southeast Asia's smallest and wealthiest nations. Serving the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, BWN handles 33 scheduled routes to 27 nonstop destinations operated by eight airlines — a tight carrier list reflecting Brunei's comparatively cautious aviation policy but a notably long average stage-length because Royal Brunei operates an all-Boeing 787 Dreamliner widebody fleet on most rotations. The airport operates a single 12,000 ft (3,658 m) lighted asphalt runway 03/21 at 73 ft (22 m) elevation. The 3,658 m strip is long enough to support Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 operations, and Royal Brunei's 787-8 fleet serves Dubai, London-Heathrow (direct), Melbourne (via Melbourne–Perth–BSB), and across Southeast and East Asia including Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul, and Narita. Internationally significant through Royal Brunei's distinction as one of the first all-widebody international flag carriers to complete a fleet renewal around the Boeing 787 family, positioning Brunei as a premium long-haul transit option between Europe and Australia via a single 787 stop at Bandar Seri Begawan. The airport benefits from substantial sultanate investment: the current 'TAS' terminal reopened in 2014 after a BND 150 million modernization. Brunei's constitutional status as an Islamic sultanate affects airport operations — alcohol is not sold airside, and separate prayer halls are provided. The airport is 11 km (6.8 mi) northeast of the capital via Jalan Berakas.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Bandar Seri Begawan

Public transportation

Purple Line public buses operate from a stop a short walk outside the terminal, connecting to the main Bandar Seri Begawan bus terminal in the city centre. The flat fare of BND 1 is paid in cash. Service is infrequent — approximately hourly — with limited evening and weekend operation, making the bus impractical for most international arrivals with luggage or late-arrival timing.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis operate from outside arrivals. Fixed-fare coupons to common destinations are available from a counter in the arrivals hall. Expected fares to central Bandar Seri Begawan (11 km / 6.8 mi) run BND 20–30 on a 15–20 minute trip. Dart — the local Bruneian ride-hailing app — is the dominant smartphone-based alternative with app-metered pricing and direct driver bookings at the airport.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, and local operators maintain counters in the airside public area of the arrivals hall. Left-hand traffic applies — Brunei drives on the left under British-era convention. An International Driving Permit is required along with the home-country licence. Brunei's road network is in exceptional condition and subsidized fuel prices make self-drive economically attractive for onward travel to the Temburong rainforest district or the Malaysian Sarawak border.
