Zvartnots International Airport is Armenia's principal international gateway and the country's only airport of meaningful international scale, serving the capital Yerevan and by extension the entire Armenian population of roughly 2.8M plus the globally distributed Armenian diaspora of perhaps 7M that treats EVN as a primary point of re-entry to the homeland. Located 7 mi (12 km) west of downtown Yerevan at an unusually high 2,838 ft (865 m) elevation on the Ararat plain, the airport handles 96 routes across 65 destinations through 37 airlines — an exceptional destination count and airline mix for a country of Armenia's population size and economic scale. EVN's unusual international connectivity reflects Armenia's geopolitical position as a landlocked country with closed land borders to both Turkey and Azerbaijan, making aviation the dominant long-distance mode of travel. FlyOne Armenia and Armenia Airways serve as the principal home-based carriers. International service includes Aeroflot, Pobeda, Pegasus, Turkish Airlines (following the post-2022 restoration of direct flights after a decade-long suspension), flydubai, Qatar Airways, Emirates, LOT, Wizz Air (which operates a significant base here), Lufthansa, Austrian, Iberia Express, ITA Airways, Air France, Ryanair, easyJet, Czech Airlines, Belavia, Ukraine International, Georgian Airways, Iran Aseman, Mahan Air, Ethiopian, and numerous Russian regional operators. The substantial Armenian diaspora communities in Russia, France, the U.S., Lebanon, Iran, Georgia, and Argentina drive heavy visiting-friends-and-relatives traffic supplementing growing tourism demand. The airfield operates a single long asphalt runway — 09/27 at 12,631 ft (3,850 m) — with length driven largely by the high-elevation performance penalty for widebody aircraft taking off in the thin Armenian highland air. The modern passenger terminal opened in stages from 2007 to 2011, replacing the distinctive 1980 Soviet-era circular terminal that was one of the most architecturally notable buildings in the Caucasus and has been preserved as a protected monument on the airport property. EVN is operated by Corporación América Airports, the Argentine-led international airport concessionaire that also runs airports in Italy, Armenia, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Brazil.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Yerevan

Public transportation

Elite Bus route 201 is the most direct public-transit option, providing 24-hour service between the airport and Yerevan city center with stops near the Opera House and Republic Square. Service runs every 20–40 min with a fare of AMD 300 (about USD 0.75) paid in cash to the driver. Journey time is 30–40 min depending on traffic. The stop is directly outside the arrivals terminal. City bus 108 also serves the airport at the same fare but takes a more circuitous route through residential districts.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxi services operate from a counter in the arrivals hall with regulated fixed fares to Yerevan districts. More commonly, arriving travelers use ride-hailing apps Yandex Go and GG Taxi (Armenia's domestic app), both of which operate at EVN with designated pickup zones and typically quote AMD 2,000–3,500 (USD 5–9) to central Yerevan for a 20–30 min trip. Unofficial drivers soliciting inside the terminal should be avoided, as their quoted fares typically run several times the regulated rate.

Rental cars

Several international and Armenian car rental companies — including Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, Enterprise, and local operators Naniko, Rental Cars Armenia, and Renty — maintain desks in the arrivals hall. Pre-booking online is advisable, especially during the peak June–September tourist season and around Armenian diaspora-heavy travel periods. A valid driver license and credit card are required, with an International Driving Permit recommended for non-Latin-script licenses. Armenian roads are adequate around Yerevan and on main highways to Lake Sevan, Dilijan, and the Georgian border, though mountain routes and rural roads can be rough.
