Sohag International Airport (HMB) serves the Upper Egyptian governorate of Sohag from a site on the west bank of the Nile about 170 mi (275 km) north of Luxor. Opened in 2000 and progressively upgraded since, it is one of Egypt's newer regional international fields and was created specifically to divert expatriate-worker and pilgrimage flows away from congested Cairo (CAI) and Luxor (LXR). The airport operates a 9,843 ft (3,000 m) asphalt runway capable of handling narrow-body widebodies on long, over-water sectors, and a modern terminal block funded in part by Gulf Cooperation Council partners. Scheduled services concentrate on Egyptian and Gulf carriers – Egypt Air, Nile Air, flynas and flydubai among them – operating to Jeddah (JED), Riyadh (RUH), Medina (MED), Kuwait (KWI), Dubai (DXB) and Cairo (CAI), with seasonal spikes around the Hajj and Umrah seasons that can dominate the annual traffic profile. Within the Upper Egyptian aviation network HMB ranks as the principal gateway between the mid-Nile Valley and the Gulf labour markets, complementing Luxor's more tourism-oriented role. The airport also supports cargo and charter operations tied to local agriculture, textiles and phosphate exports from the Sohag governorate, making it a quietly strategic node in Egypt's regional airport hierarchy rather than a high-profile tourist gateway.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Suhaj

Public transportation

Public transport at HMB is built around shared minibus and microbus services that run along the agricultural road linking the airport with Sohag city and nearby towns such as Akhmim and Tahta. These services are cheap but informal, operate in Arabic and are not well suited to travellers with heavy luggage; most arriving passengers instead use taxis or pre-booked hotel cars.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed white taxis and private-hire cars wait at arrivals for each scheduled flight, serving Sohag city, Akhmim and longer-distance destinations including Asyut and Qena. Fares are almost always negotiated rather than metered, with Gulf-season demand pushing prices higher; agreeing a total price in Egyptian pounds before departure is standard practice.

Rental cars

Self-drive rental availability at HMB is modest, with a small number of Egyptian and regional agencies serving mainly business travellers. Vehicles are generally sedans or compact SUVs; international driving permits and a credit card are expected. Many visitors instead hire a driver through the rental company, which is common practice across Upper Egypt given local traffic and navigation conditions.
