Khartoum International Airport (KRT) is the principal airport of Sudan, occupying a central site at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers within the Sudanese capital. It is historically one of northeast Africa's major aviation crossroads, developed from a 1930s British-era airfield into the hub of Sudan Airways and long a refuelling point for trans-Saharan and Red Sea corridor flights. Before the 2023 outbreak of civil war the airport operated a 9,840 ft (3,000 m) main runway and a terminal complex that hosted Sudan Airways, Badr Airlines, Tarco, EgyptAir, Emirates, flydubai, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and Saudia, among others, serving routes across the Gulf, North Africa, East Africa, Europe and, via partners, Asia. The field was also a regular diversion point for long-haul flights over the Horn of Africa and a logistical hub for peacekeeping and humanitarian operations in Darfur and South Sudan. The central-Khartoum location, squeezed between densely populated districts, had long motivated plans to replace the field with a new airport at Omdurman or Bagair. Following the 2023 conflict the airport was closed to civil traffic and suffered significant damage, and subsequent operations shifted toward Port Sudan (PZU) and Wadi Halfa on a temporary basis. On African aviation league tables KRT remains historically among the top Saharan hubs by runway length, ramp capacity and pre-war international network, and retains strategic importance as the designated civil gateway of one of the continent's largest countries.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Khartoum

Public transportation

In normal operations public minibuses and shared amjad-style vans link the airport gates with central Khartoum, Omdurman and Khartoum North, running on fixed corridors and paid in Sudanese pounds. Service patterns have been severely disrupted since 2023 and travellers should verify current conditions locally before planning onward journeys.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered yellow taxis and negotiated-fare private cars traditionally meet scheduled flights, serving downtown hotels and the diplomatic quarter. Fares are commonly agreed in advance in Sudanese pounds or, for long runs, U.S. dollars. Security conditions since 2023 have made pre-booked transport through a hotel or tour operator the standard approach whenever the airport is operational.

Rental cars

Sudanese and regional rental agencies historically offered sedans and 4x4s suitable for travel between the three cities and out to Meroë or Port Sudan, but supply has been sharply constrained since 2023. Most travellers now rely on chauffeur-driven hires arranged via hotels, employers or humanitarian organisations rather than self-drive rentals.
