Kansas City International Airport is the primary commercial airport for Kansas City and the bi-state Kansas City metropolitan area, one of the larger combined metro markets in the US interior with a catchment extending across western Missouri, eastern Kansas, and portions of southern Iowa and northern Oklahoma. Located 15 mi (24 km) northwest of downtown Kansas City in Platte County, Missouri, MCI handles 129 routes to 70 destinations with 22 airlines. The airport opened its landmark new single terminal in 2023, replacing the historically unusual three-horseshoe terminal configuration that had defined MCI since 1972 — the old design was celebrated for short walks from curb to gate but became operationally obsolete in a post-9/11 security environment. No airline maintains a traditional hub at MCI, and the route network reflects a competitive focus-city pattern. Southwest Airlines is the largest operator by seats and treats MCI as one of its most important non-hub focus cities; American, Delta, United, Alaska Airlines, Frontier, Spirit, Allegiant, Breeze Airways, and Sun Country all operate. International service is limited but meaningful — seasonal Icelandair service to Reykjavík, British Airways (historically), and frequent Mexico/Caribbean charter operations. The route map emphasizes major hub connectivity (Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas), leisure destinations in Florida and the Southwest, and a solid core of business-oriented midwestern routes. The airfield has three concrete runways: 01L/19R at 10,801 ft (3,292 m), 09/27 at 9,501 ft (2,896 m), and 01R/19L at 9,500 ft (2,896 m). Elevation is 1,026 ft (313 m). The new single terminal — a USD 1.5-billion project that is the largest single infrastructure investment in Kansas City history — consolidated all operations into one building with 39 gates and is designed for major capacity growth. MCI also hosts a significant Boeing B737-family maintenance base and an extensive cargo operation supporting the region's logistics sector. The IATA code MCI refers to the previous Mid-Continent International name.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Kansas City

Public transportation

The KCATA RideKC Route 229 Boardwalk-KCI bus provides a direct zero-fare connection between the airport and downtown Kansas City, with stops serving the Power & Light District, Union Station area, and downtown employment centers. Service runs roughly 04:30 to midnight on weekdays with reduced weekend frequency. Stops are at the north and south ends of the Arrivals-level commercial curb. No rail service reaches the airport — the KC Streetcar system operates only in central Kansas City — though long-term plans for a rail extension have been studied.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxi ranks operate on the Arrivals-level inner curb outside baggage claim. Uber and Lyft serve dedicated pickup zones in the same area and consistently dominate trip volume. Typical fares: USD 45–65 to downtown Kansas City (25–35 min), USD 55–80 to the Country Club Plaza and Westport districts, USD 35–50 to Kansas City International's on-airport hotels, USD 60–90 to Overland Park and Johnson County (Kansas suburbs), USD 90–130 to Independence and Lee's Summit. No metered fixed-rate system applies; fares are per the taxi company's tariff or the rideshare app's surge pricing.

Rental cars

A consolidated Rental Car Facility sits a short distance from the single terminal, reached by free continuous 24/7 gray-branded shuttle buses from the Arrivals-level center commercial curb (roughly 5–8 min ride). All major agencies — Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt, Thrifty — operate from desks in the consolidated facility. The consolidated design is particularly clean given the new-terminal era at MCI. Advance booking is recommended for weekends and major Kansas City event dates (NFL Chiefs home games, MLB Royals weekends, Big 12 tournaments).
