Aden Adde International, named for Somalia's first president, is the country's sole operational international gateway and — despite security constraints that shape every aspect of its operation — the principal air link for a nation of approximately 18 million. The 3,185 m (10,446 ft) asphalt runway on Mogadishu's southern Indian Ocean shoreline is long enough for full-payload 767 and A330 operations, which is the physical precondition for MGQ's place on any list of the 534 largest airports. Roughly 12 airlines operate 28 routes to 11 destinations (2026). Turkish Airlines — which also manages the terminal via a 2014 concession awarded to Favori LLC — runs daily widebody service from Istanbul, making MGQ one of the few African capitals reachable nonstop from Europe in a single sector. Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, flydubai, Qatar Airways, Daallo, African Express, and Jubba connect Mogadishu to Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Dubai, Doha, Djibouti, and the secondary Somali cities of Hargeisa, Garowe, and Kismayo. The resident AMISOM/ATMIS successor mission contracts add substantial non-scheduled UN and humanitarian cargo traffic. The Halane compound adjoining the airfield hosts the UN mission, several embassies, and African Union aviation elements, effectively turning MGQ into the country's secure diplomatic zone. A new Turkish-built terminal opened in 2015 brought jet bridges, modern screening, and a 1.5M-passenger nameplate capacity. The airport's significance is structural rather than volumetric — without it, there is no commercial aviation link to Somalia's capital region at all.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Mogadishu

Public transportation

There is no scheduled public bus or rail service to the airport. Local bajajs (auto-rickshaws) and informal minibuses operate in Mogadishu but are not a practical or recommended option for arrivals. Pre-arranged secure transport is the universal standard.

Taxis & rideshare

Unregulated taxis wait outside the terminal, but security practice dictates using only vehicles pre-arranged through hotels, the UN common services office, or an accredited private security company. Fares are cash (USD or SOS) and negotiated. Armored or escorted transport is common for diplomatic and NGO arrivals.

Rental cars

Self-drive international rental brands do not operate at MGQ. Visitors hire a car with driver — and, in most cases, with an armed security detail — booked in advance through private security firms, tour operators, or accommodation providers. Vehicle choice ranges from standard sedans to armored 4x4s.
