Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is Mauritius's sole international airport and one of the most connected island-nation airports in the Indian Ocean, serving a destination whose USD 1.6 billion annual tourism economy depends almost entirely on air access. MRU handles 42 scheduled routes to 26 nonstop destinations operated by 23 airlines — an airline-diversity figure that ranks among the highest in sub-Saharan Africa and reflects Mauritius's open-skies policy for bilateral long-haul carriers. The airport is the home base and principal hub of Air Mauritius, which operates a fleet of Airbus A330neo and A350 widebodies on routes to Paris, London, Mumbai, Singapore, Perth, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Dubai. The single 11,056 ft (3,370 m) asphalt runway 14/32 at 186 ft (57 m) elevation is long enough to accommodate fully loaded Airbus A380 operations, and MRU has hosted A380 service from Emirates during peak season. The current passenger terminal, designed by ADP Ingénierie and inaugurated in 2013, has a 4.5 million annual passenger capacity and a pagoda-influenced roofline reflecting the island's Chinese, Indian, and European heritage. International significance extends beyond tourism. Mauritius markets itself as the financial gateway between India and Africa, and MRU carries heavy business traffic through double-daily service on Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines connecting to European, Gulf, and Asian hubs. The airport sits on the southeast coast at Plaisance in the Plaine Magnien district, 48 km (30 mi) from the capital Port Louis, a long transfer by island standards that has produced a dense taxi, coach, and private-transfer ecosystem.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Plaine Magnien

Public transportation

National Transport Corporation buses on routes 9, 10, 198, and the express Service 198 connect the airport with Mahébourg (10 min, MUR 34) and Port Louis Victoria Square (70–90 min, MUR 50). The stop sits in the main airport car park, a 5-minute walk from the terminal. Services run approximately every 20 minutes between 06:00 and 20:00, with reduced Sunday frequency. Larger luggage is permitted at the driver's discretion.

Taxis & rideshare

Regulated airport taxis queue outside the Tour Operators Hall. Fixed published rates by destination zone run MUR 1,400–1,800 to Flic-en-Flac (west coast resorts), MUR 1,600–2,200 to Grand Baie (north coast), and MUR 1,200 to Port Louis. Printed rate cards are posted at the taxi desk. Driving is on the left; taxis are right-hand-drive saloons and most accept credit cards.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Budget, and several Mauritian operators share counters in the arrivals hall. Left-hand traffic and a dense roundabout-based road network make navigation straightforward for UK, Australian, Japanese, and South African drivers. The M1 motorway connects the airport directly to the north coast in 45–60 minutes. An International Driving Permit is technically required but a home-country licence is usually accepted on short hires.
