Ivato Airport

Ivato Airport, 15 km northwest of Antananarivo, is Madagascar's principal international gateway and the only airport on the island nation capable of regularly accepting long-haul widebody aircraft. The 3,100 m (10,171 ft) asphalt runway at 1,280 m (4,198 ft) elevation — a hot-and-high operating environment — accommodates Airbus A340, A350, and Boeing 787 flights from Paris and Mauritius, and this runway capability plus sole-widebody-gateway status for a country of roughly 32 million secures TNR's place in the 534 largest. About 11 airlines operate 20 routes to 18 destinations (2026). Air Madagascar (the flag carrier, rebranded as Madagascar Airlines in 2023), Air France, Corsair, Air Austral, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian, Turkish Airlines, Air Mauritius, South African Airways, and Tsaradia (Madagascar's domestic subsidiary) cover Paris, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Mauritius, Réunion, Comoros, Mayotte, and a comprehensive domestic network to Nosy Be, Toamasina, Mahajanga, Toliara, Fianarantsoa, and Fort Dauphin. The domestic dimension is operationally critical: Madagascar's limited road network makes air the default for inter-city travel. A comprehensive terminal rebuild under a Ravinala Airports (Aéroports de Paris–led) concession opened in 2022, replacing the cramped 1960s facility with a modern two-pier terminal and new apron capable of handling four widebodies simultaneously. Ivato is also the Madagascar Air Force's principal base, hosts the Madagascar Airlines maintenance hub, and serves as the regional widebody alternate for Mauritius and Réunion. A second Madagascar airport on Nosy Be handles significant tourist traffic but lacks TNR's widebody range and diplomatic-capital status.
