Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International is India's second-busiest airport and one of the world's most operationally constrained major hubs, handling 52.8M passengers (2023) through a crossing-runway configuration that is unique among top-tier global airports. With 09/27 at 11,511 ft (3,509 m) and 14/32 at 9,419 ft (2,871 m) intersecting mid-field, BOM can use only one runway at a time for movements — making it the busiest single-runway-equivalent operation on earth, peaking at 51 movements per hour on a site boxed in by Mumbai's densest residential districts. Air India operates its largest hub here following the 2022 Tata reacquisition and 2024 Vistara merger, running the widest long-haul network of any Indian airport: nonstops to New York (JFK and EWR), Washington Dulles, San Francisco, London-Heathrow, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, Tokyo, Sydney, and Melbourne. IndiGo anchors a massive low-cost operation, while SpiceJet, Akasa, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, and British Airways all operate multiple daily frequencies. Across 60 airlines the airport serves 138 destinations on 288 scheduled routes. Terminal 2, opened 2014 with a SOM-designed X-shaped plan on 439,000 sq m (4.73M sq ft), consolidates all international and full-service domestic operations under a signature lotus-motif ceiling — the "Jaya He" art installation is the world's largest integrated airport public-art program. Terminal 1 serves low-cost domestic carriers and the two are not landside-connected, requiring shuttle transit. BOM's capacity constraints prompted construction of the 2029-opening Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) 35 km southeast; until then, overnight closures on the intersecting runway limit the growth ceiling. Elevation is just 39 ft (12 m), one of the lowest of any megahub.

Ground transport options from Mumbai

Public transportation

Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) opened service to Terminal 2 in 2024, reaching Bandra Kurla Complex in 20 minutes and onward to Cuffe Parade (South Mumbai) in 45 minutes for ₹30–₹70. Trains run every 6–10 minutes from 06:00 to 23:00. BEST bus routes serve suburban Mumbai from both terminals for ₹15–₹40. No rail link connects the two terminals.

Taxis & rideshare

Meru, Ola, and Uber operate from designated pickup zones on the arrivals roadway at both terminals. Prepaid airport taxi counters in arrivals halls offer fixed fares to South Mumbai (₹600–₹900, 45–90 minutes), Bandra (₹400, 30 minutes), and Andheri (₹250, 15 minutes). Traffic delays of 60+ minutes are routine during weekday peaks on the Western Express Highway.

Rental cars

Self-drive rental is less developed than in Western markets; chauffeured car hire dominates. Zoomcar, Revv, and Myles operate self-drive counters in Terminal 2 arrivals. Avis, Hertz, and Europcar provide international-brand chauffeured service. Vehicle pickup is at the P1 multi-storey parkade, 4 minutes on foot from arrivals.
