General Mariano Escobedo International Airport (MTY) is the principal aviation gateway to northeastern Mexico and the third-busiest airport in the country after Mexico City and Cancún, handling more than 14 million passengers a year. Serving Monterrey — Mexico's industrial capital and the wealthiest metropolitan area per capita in Latin America, with a population of more than 5 million — MTY is a strategic node for manufacturing, financial and cross-border commuter traffic connected to Texas and the wider U.S. border industrial complex. It is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA). MTY sits in Apodaca, about 24 km (15 mi) northeast of central Monterrey, at an elevation of 1,278 ft (390 m). Two asphalt runways — 12/30 at 9,843 ft (3,000 m) and a crosswind 16/34 at 5,909 ft (1,801 m) — support widebody operations by Boeing 787 and Airbus A330. Three terminals — Terminal A for both domestic and international Aeroméxico/SkyTeam traffic, Terminal B for Viva Aerobus (Monterrey is its main hub), and Terminal C for Volaris and other low-cost carriers — separate operations, and a planned Terminal D is in final design to lift capacity above 20 million passengers per year. Twenty-one airlines link MTY to 67 nonstop destinations, with Viva Aerobus, Aeroméxico and Volaris anchoring the domestic network to every major Mexican city and Viva's hub flying driving routes to Houston, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, San Antonio, Austin, Los Angeles, Chicago, Havana, Panama City and Medellín. American, United, Delta, Copa and Air Canada provide complementary North American service. MTY's role as Mexico's principal industrial airport, its dense cross-border business traffic and its status as Viva's primary base keep it one of the most strategically important airports in North America (2025).

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Monterrey

Public transportation

Grupo Senda and Transportes del Norte operate intercity coach services from a marked stand outside each terminal to Monterrey's Central de Autobuses in Barrio Antiguo and to the nearby city of Saltillo, with fares around 130 to 170 MXN and frequent departures. Local public transit to central Monterrey is limited at the airport itself; most onward trips use a short taxi or rideshare to Apodaca, from which Metro Line 1 reaches downtown. A dedicated suburban rail line to the airport has been announced under Monterrey's Tren Ligero extension but is not yet open.

Taxis & rideshare

Authorized white-and-yellow airport taxis operate 24/7 from each terminal. Fares are fixed by zone and prepaid at clearly marked kiosks inside arrivals — typically 400 to 550 MXN to central Monterrey and 650 to 800 MXN to San Pedro Garza García. Uber and DiDi are legal and widely used, collecting from signposted rideshare zones outside arrivals at prices usually 20 to 30 percent below prepaid taxis. Street-hailed drivers inside the terminal should be avoided.

Rental cars

Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, National, Alamo, Budget, Thrifty, Mex Rent a Car and local operator América Car Rental maintain counters inside arrivals at each terminal, with on-airport pickup. A home-country licence and a major credit card with sufficient hold capacity are required; comprehensive Mexican insurance is effectively mandatory and is often bundled at the counter. Advance booking generally produces noticeably lower daily rates.
