Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International Airport is the principal airport for Guadalajara and the Mexican state of Jalisco, and the third-busiest passenger airport in Mexico after Mexico City and Cancún. Located 10 mi (16 km) south of central Guadalajara, GDL sits at a high elevation of 5,016 ft (1,529 m) on the Jalisco plateau, a characteristic of all major central-Mexican airports. The route network spans 137 routes to 84 destinations flown by 28 airlines, underpinned by Guadalajara's role as Mexico's second-largest metropolitan economy, a major tech and manufacturing hub ("Mexico's Silicon Valley"), and the cultural capital of the mariachi and tequila regions. GDL is one of Aeroméxico's largest spoke operations outside Mexico City and a primary base for Viva (ex-Viva Aerobus), Volaris, and TAR Aerolíneas. Long-haul international service is provided by Aeroméxico, Volaris, American, Delta, United, Alaska Airlines, Southwest, Frontier, Spirit, Sun Country, JetBlue, WestJet, Air Canada, Iberia, KLM, and Aerus. The route map is heavily weighted toward the United States — particularly California (LAX, SFO, OAK, SJC, ONT, SAN), the Pacific Northwest, Texas (DFW, IAH, SAT), Chicago, and US-Mexico diaspora markets — alongside Madrid, Panama City, Bogotá, and regular domestic service across Mexico. GDL is the busiest Mexican airport for nonstop US service outside the Mexico City metro. The airfield has two parallel asphalt runways: 11R/29L at 13,123 ft (4,000 m) and 11L/29R at 11,608 ft (3,538 m). The 11R runway was extended to accommodate full-payload departures to Madrid and Asia. The single passenger terminal, operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), has undergone multiple expansions and is currently midway through a major USD 1-billion-plus modernization that adds a second passenger terminal, a third runway (long-term), and expanded customs, immigration, and commercial concessions to handle projected growth past 30 million annual passengers.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Guadalajara

Public transportation

Line 3 of the Guadalajara SITEUR light-rail system terminates at the Central de Autobuses / Belenes station; connections to the airport require a transfer to municipal bus or taxi. Direct coach service is operated by several intercity lines — ETN, Primera Plus, ATM, and La Línea — connecting GDL to central Guadalajara, Zapopan, the Central Nueva bus terminal, Puerto Vallarta, Tepic, Aguascalientes, and León, with ticketing at counters in the arrivals hall. Local public bus routes pass the airport perimeter on Carretera Guadalajara–Chapala but are not recommended with luggage.

Taxis & rideshare

Official prepaid airport taxis (Taxi Autorizado) sell fixed-rate zoned tickets at counters in the arrivals hall before the terminal exit. Typical fares: MXN 300–400 to central Guadalajara and the Expo Guadalajara convention district, MXN 350–450 to Zapopan and Providencia, MXN 400–550 to Tlaquepaque and Tonalá, MXN 700–900 to Chapala and Ajijic on the lake. Uber and DiDi operate at designated pickup points in the short-term parking structure and are typically 25–40% cheaper than the official counter rate. Trips take 25–45 minutes depending on traffic on the Carretera a Chapala.

Rental cars

All major global rental brands (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Sixt, National, Europcar, Alamo, Thrifty, Dollar, Enterprise) plus local operators (Sixt, América, Mex Rent a Car, Green Motion) have desks in the arrivals area. Mexican third-party liability insurance is mandatory and must be purchased separately from any home-country coverage; this often significantly increases the effective daily rate relative to the quoted base. A credit card and driver's license are required; a passport is typically requested. Advance booking is strongly recommended during December–January and during the Guadalajara Book Fair (FIL), the largest Spanish-language book fair in the world.
