General Guadalupe Victoria International Airport is the principal airport of Durango state in north-central Mexico, serving the state capital Victoria de Durango and the broader Sierra Madre Occidental highland region. Named after Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of the independent United Mexican States, the airport is located 9 mi (14 km) east of central Durango at a high 6,104 ft (1,860 m) elevation on the altiplano — an altitude that requires hot-and-high performance allowances for scheduled commercial operations, particularly during Durango's warm summer months. The airport has operated with international designation since the 1990s and handles scheduled service to Mexico City, major regional hubs, and diaspora destinations in the United States. The airport handles 11 routes across 9 destinations through 7 airlines. Aeroméxico, Viva Aerobus, Volaris, TAR Aerolíneas, and VivaAerobus operate the Mexican-domestic network with dominant flows to Mexico City (AICM and AIFA), Monterrey, Guadalajara, Tijuana, and Cancún. Transborder services to Chicago and other U.S. cities operate seasonally or periodically, supporting Durango's substantial migrant population in the American Midwest. The route network reflects the state's mining, forestry, and agricultural economy as well as its cultural significance as Mexico's historic western-film location (the Durango-area landscapes featured in countless classic Hollywood and Mexican westerns). The single asphalt runway 03/21 measures 9,514 ft (2,900 m), specified to accommodate the elevation-related performance penalty at Durango's high altitude. The terminal is a compact single-building facility operated by Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA), the publicly-traded airport operator that manages 13 Mexican airports in the center-north region. Durango's mountainous topography and afternoon thunderstorm patterns during the summer rainy season produce periodic operational disruptions.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Durango

Public transportation

There are no dedicated public bus routes or scheduled shuttles connecting the airport to central Durango. Travelers requiring public transit must first take a taxi into the city to reach the main bus station. The majority of passengers use taxis, ride-hailing, or rental cars.

Taxis & rideshare

Authorized airport taxis operate under a zone-based fixed-fare system with pre-paid tickets sold at counters inside the arrivals hall. This regulated system avoids fare disputes and is the safest and most recommended option. Uber has been introduced to Durango and offers an alternative with transparent upfront pricing.

Rental cars

Major international agencies including Hertz, Avis, and Europcar maintain counters within the terminal. Advance booking is advised during Mexican holiday peaks and summer tourism seasons. The airport's elevation of roughly 1 mi (1.6 km) above sea level means vehicle performance can differ noticeably from coastal Mexican airports.
