N'Djamena International Airport is the sole international gateway to Chad, serving the national capital and functioning as the country's principal link to global air networks. Located on the southern edge of N'Djamena at 968 ft (295 m) elevation, the airport shares its single runway with Adji Kossei Air Base, the headquarters of the Chadian Air Force and a long-standing French Air and Space Force (Armée de l'air et de l'espace) detachment under Operation Barkhane's successor arrangements. The field handles 18 routes across 10 destinations through 10 airlines, a network that while modest reflects Chad's position as a landlocked central-Saharan republic where aviation is the primary means of international travel. No airline bases a hub here; N'Djamena is served by a mix of African and European flag carriers. Air France operates the flagship long-haul link to Paris Charles de Gaulle, while Ethiopian Airlines connects via Addis Ababa, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, and regional carriers including ASKY Airlines, Kenya Airways, Royal Air Maroc, EgyptAir, and Camair-Co feed traffic to Lomé, Nairobi, Casablanca, Cairo, and Douala. The route pattern concentrates on African capitals, Middle Eastern and European hubs, and a handful of Sahelian points — a network typical of a capital-city airport in a low-traffic emerging market. The single asphalt runway 05/23 measures 9,186 ft (2,800 m), sufficient for widebody operations including the Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s that operate the Paris and Addis Ababa services. The terminal is a compact single-building facility handling both arrivals and departures; ICAO identifier FTTJ reflects the field's dual civil-military role. The airport also serves as a significant humanitarian and UN logistics hub, with the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) operating relief flights across the Lake Chad basin and into refugee-hosting regions of eastern Chad.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from N'Djamena

Public transportation

There is no scheduled public bus or rail service connecting N'Djamena International Airport to the city. Informal shared minibuses and 'clando' shared taxis operate on the arterial roads near the airport perimeter but do not enter terminal grounds, follow no published schedule, and are not practical for arriving international passengers with luggage. The overwhelming majority of travelers use pre-arranged hotel transfers or private taxis.

Taxis & rideshare

Unmetered taxis wait outside the arrivals hall and are the default option for reaching the city center, which lies roughly 4 mi (7 km) north and a 10 to 15 minute drive away. Fares must be negotiated and agreed before departure; payment is typically in Central African CFA francs (XAF), though some drivers accept euros or US dollars. Hotel pre-booked transfers are widely preferred by first-time visitors for reliability and security.

Rental cars

Major international rental brands have a very limited presence at N'Djamena. Most vehicle hire is arranged in advance through local agencies, embassy-recommended operators, or hotels, and almost always includes a professional driver rather than self-drive. Chauffeur-driven arrangements are the standard and strongly recommended option given local road conditions, security considerations, and the lack of consistent signage outside the capital.
