Douala International Airport

Douala International Airport is Cameroon's largest and busiest airport and the principal international gateway for Central Africa's most populous economy. Positioned at sea-level elevation of 33 ft (10 m) on the Wouri estuary, DLA handles 44 scheduled routes to 26 nonstop destinations across Africa and Europe, operated by 17 airlines — a route breadth notable for a single-runway field and a reflection of Douala's role as Cameroon's economic capital and the gateway to the Port of Douala, the largest seaport in the CEMAC customs zone. The airport functions with a single 9,350 ft (2,850 m) asphalt runway aligned 12/30, lighted for 24-hour operations. Its scale within the region is defined less by physical infrastructure than by commercial centrality: Camair-Co maintains its hub here, and European carriers Air France, Brussels Airlines, and Turkish Airlines anchor a long-haul network that connects Cameroon to Paris, Brussels, and Istanbul. African services fan out to Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Lagos, Casablanca, and the regional CEMAC cities. Douala's passenger terminal, opened in 1977 and progressively modernized, processes both international and domestic traffic under one roof. The airport's equatorial, humid location (4.0° N) places it among the wettest major hubs on the African continent, with operations continuing year-round through Cameroon's two pronounced rainy seasons. For cargo, DLA is the principal freight node for the six-nation CEMAC bloc, handling shipments that move overland from landlocked Chad, Central African Republic, and northern Cameroon. That combination — commercial primacy, multimodal link to West Africa's second-largest port, and concentration of regional headquarters — makes Douala internationally significant out of proportion to its passenger count.
