Port-Gentil International Airport (POG) serves Gabon's second city and oil-industry capital from a coastal site on the Île de Mandji, at the mouth of the Ogooué River. Operating at just 13 ft (4 m) elevation, the airport is the principal aviation link to Gabon's offshore petroleum sector, serving oilfield rotations for TotalEnergies, Perenco and Assala Energy alongside general tourism and business traffic to the surrounding Cape Lopez region. Port-Gentil is unusual among African regional centres in being effectively cut off from the rest of the country by road: no paved highway connects it to Libreville, making the 25-minute flight over the Gabon estuary an essential lifeline rather than a convenience. The airport operates an asphalt runway sized for narrow-body jet and turboprop traffic, supporting daily Afrijet and ASKY services to Libreville (LBV), plus regional links and charter operations to offshore helipads. On West African aviation league tables POG ranks as one of the busiest single-runway airports in the Gulf of Guinea by scheduled domestic frequencies, reflecting its hub-and-spoke role within Gabon's petroleum logistics. International flights have historically included links to Douala (DLA), Cotonou (COO) and Paris, and the field acts as a staging point for cargo and crew movements supporting the deepwater blocks offshore. Its combination of oil-sector traffic, constrained island geography and long-running strategic importance gives POG a role outsized relative to its population base.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Port Gentil

Public transportation

Public transport in Port-Gentil is built around shared minibus taxis, known locally as taxi-bus, which run along the main arteries linking the airport perimeter, the city centre and the industrial port. Services are cash-only in Central African CFA francs, frequent during daylight hours and commonly used by local commuters rather than business travellers.

Taxis & rideshare

Shared and private yellow taxis wait outside arrivals and serve destinations across the island, from downtown Port-Gentil to the refinery and expatriate residential quarters. Fares are negotiated rather than metered, with a surcharge for exclusive (non-shared) use; companies tied to oil operators often pre-book dedicated vehicles for crew transfers.

Rental cars

Self-drive rental is limited to a handful of Gabonese and international-affiliate agencies catering mainly to oil-company contractors. Vehicles are typically 4x4s suitable for the island's mix of sealed and gravel roads. Corporate accounts dominate the market, and individual travellers should pre-book through their hotel or tour operator as walk-in availability is inconsistent.
