Tocumen International is the busiest airport in Central America and the defining connecting hub of Copa Airlines' Hub of the Americas — ranked by BigAirports as the most important inter-American connection point outside the continental United States. Located 24 km east of Panama City at 135 ft (41 m) elevation, PTY handles roughly 18M passengers annually and connects North, Central, South America and the Caribbean through a peak-hour banking structure built specifically around Copa's Star Alliance network. Two runways — 03R/21L at 10,006 ft (3,050 m) and 03L/21R at 8,800 ft (2,682 m) — serve the operation, with Terminal 1 (legacy) and Terminal 2 (the T2 South Terminal opened in 2019, adding 20 contact gates and 96,000 square meters of floor area) linked airside. Panama's position on the isthmus gives PTY a fuel-burn and block-time advantage that no other hub in the Americas can match: from Panama City, non-stop reach covers essentially every major city from Buenos Aires to Montreal. The 155 routes to 106 destinations across 39 airlines reflect this geographic arbitrage — Copa alone serves more than 80 cities across 30-plus countries from PTY using a fleet of Boeing 737s and 737 MAX aircraft. American, United, Delta, KLM, Air France, Iberia, Turkish, Lufthansa (seasonal), Emirates, Air Canada and most South American flag carriers add long-haul capacity. PTY functions as both the connecting heart of Latin America and a dedicated cargo node for the Colón Free Trade Zone — the second-largest free port in the world — and the Panama Canal's transshipment economy. Its combination of dollarized pricing, Oneworld/Star/SkyTeam crossover presence and time-zone centrality keeps it structurally irreplaceable.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Tocumen

Public transportation

Panama Metro Line 2 terminates at Aeropuerto station directly adjacent to the terminal, reaching San Miguelito (Line 1 interchange) in roughly 30 minutes and onward to Albrook and central Panama City. A rechargeable Metro Bus card is required for both Metro and the MiBus Route E489 express coach serving Corredor Sur. Fares are a flat USD 0.35–1.25.

Taxis & rideshare

Authorized airport taxis operate on a fixed zone tariff — typical rates run USD 30 to Panama City center and USD 35–40 to Punta Pacífica or Costa del Este. Confirm the zone and fare at the dispatch booth before boarding. Uber and Cabify operate legally with designated pickup zones and often undercut taxi pricing significantly.

Rental cars

Hertz, Avis, Budget, Sixt, National, Alamo, Enterprise, Thrifty and local operators maintain desks in the arrivals area of both T1 and T2. A valid home-country license, passport and credit card are required; Panamanian law requires the driver's name on the rental agreement. Pan-American Highway access from the airport is direct.
