Rotterdam The Hague Airport is the third-busiest airport in the Netherlands after Amsterdam Schiphol and Eindhoven, handling roughly 2.3 million passengers annually. Though dwarfed by Schiphol 60 km (37 mi) to the north, RTM occupies a distinctive niche as the dedicated regional airport for the Rotterdam and The Hague metropolitan area — together the largest urban agglomeration in the Netherlands after Amsterdam, with a combined population of 2.4 million — and functions as a slot-relief valve for Schiphol's chronically constrained capacity. The airport's commercial traffic skews heavily toward European leisure and business point-to-point routes, with Transavia operating its second-largest base here after Schiphol and TUI fly Netherlands running seasonal Mediterranean and Canary Islands charters. Regional service to London City, Manchester, Hamburg, Munich, Zurich, and Luxembourg supports the nearby Port of Rotterdam — Europe's largest — and the diplomatic and legal community in The Hague, which hosts the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court. A single runway, 06/24, measures 7,218 ft (2,200 m), limiting widebody operations but comfortably accommodating 737, A320, and E-Jet equipment. RTM is also a major general aviation and business aviation airport, with the largest executive jet fleet in the Benelux region based here. The terminal is compact and single-story, with eight contact stands. Noise restrictions limit operating hours (07:00–23:00 for scheduled service), and the airport operates under an annual passenger cap set by the Dutch government at 2.2 million — one of the tightest regulatory constraints on any major European airport — making growth-through-aircraft-upgauging rather than movement-increase the operational reality.
