Tan Son Nhat International is Vietnam's busiest airport and the principal international gateway for Ho Chi Minh City (the former Saigon), handling roughly 41M passengers (2024) across 208 weekly routes to 93 destinations on 54 airlines. SGN has consistently ranked as one of Southeast Asia's ten busiest airports and the single-biggest passenger node in Vietnam, driven by Vietnam Airlines' SkyTeam hub operation and the rapid expansion of low-cost carriers VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways, both of which operate their largest bases here. The airport's defining constraint is geography: SGN is embedded inside Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Binh District, only 7 km (4 mi) from the central business district, surrounded by dense urban development that makes expansion impossible. Two parallel runways at 12,468 ft (3,800 m) and 10,007 ft (3,050 m) operate at saturation levels, and the existing twin-terminal complex (T1 domestic, T2 international) is over capacity. A third terminal (T3), designed to add 20M annual passengers, opened in 2025, but Vietnam's long-term solution is the new Long Thanh International Airport 40 km (25 mi) east, which will open in phases from 2026 and eventually replace SGN as the regional hub. International reach concentrates on Asia: daily or multi-daily service operates to every major Northeast Asian capital (Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Taipei, Hong Kong) and throughout Southeast Asia, plus long-haul service to Frankfurt, Paris, London, Moscow, Melbourne, Sydney, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The airport's 33 ft (10 m) sea-level elevation imposes no performance penalties, and its central-city location gives SGN one of the shortest terminal-to-downtown transit times of any major Asian hub.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Ho Chi Minh City

Public transportation

Public bus service is the most economical option, departing from the bus station opposite the international terminal. Bus 109 is a modern air-conditioned shuttle running to Ben Thanh Market in District 1, the main backpacker area in about 45 minutes for VND 20,000. Bus 152 is a standard local service covering the same corridor at lower cost but without luggage space. Shuttle Bus 49 offers premium service with hotel drop-offs in Districts 1 and 3. Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 1 does not yet serve the airport directly.

Taxis & rideshare

Official metered taxis from Vinasun (white) and Mai Linh (green) queue at managed stands outside the arrivals terminals 24/7, with airport staff supervising the queue to prevent unlicensed pickups. A fare to District 1 typically runs VND 150,000–250,000 in 20–45 minutes depending on traffic. Grab ride-hailing is widely used with a dedicated pickup zone, and is generally the preferred option for foreign visitors due to transparent in-app pricing.

Rental cars

Self-drive rentals are uncommon and not recommended for foreign visitors given Vietnam's dense motorbike traffic and the fact that international driving permits are not universally recognized. The standard option is to hire a car with a driver for a fixed daily or per-trip price, arranged at transportation counters in the arrivals hall or pre-booked online through operators such as Saigon Car Rental and Klook.
