Noi Bai International is the main airport for Hanoi and the largest airport in northern Vietnam, handling more than 25M passengers in 2024 — second in the country after Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat (SGN). Located in Soc Son District about 27 km (17 mi) north of central Hanoi at just 39 ft (12 m) elevation, HAN is the principal air gateway to the Red River Delta and, by extension, one of the two air entry points for Vietnam's foreign direct investment boom, driven by electronics manufacturing in Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, and Hai Phong. The airport is a home base for Vietnam Airlines, which concentrates much of its long-haul fleet here, alongside the fast-growing low-cost carriers VietJet Air, Bamboo Airways, and Vietravel Airlines. In total 61 airlines run 182 scheduled routes to 90 destinations. Domestic trunk volume to Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang is among the densest city-pair traffic in Asia, while international reach covers all major East and Southeast Asian hubs — Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur — plus nonstops to Paris, Frankfurt, London, Doha, and Dubai. HAN operates two parallel runways: a 12,466 ft (3,800 m) primary (11R/29L) and a 10,499 ft (3,200 m) secondary (11L/29R), together capable of handling the full widebody fleet including 777s, 787s, A350s, and occasional A380 charter movements. Two terminals — T1 for domestic service and the Japanese-financed T2 for international traffic, opened in 2015 — split operations, and a third terminal and third runway have been committed as part of the master plan to accommodate projected growth to over 60M passengers annually.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Hanoi (Soc Son)

Public transportation

The tourist-friendly option is Express Bus 86, which connects both terminals with the Old Quarter and Hanoi Railway Station for around 45,000 VND. Standard city buses (routes 07, 17, 90, and the electric E10) are cheaper but slower and more crowded. There is currently no direct metro or rail link to the airport, although extensions of the Hanoi Metro have been included in long-range plans.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis from reputable firms such as Mai Linh, G7 Taxi, and Taxi Group queue outside arrivals. The 27 km (17 mi) run into the city center takes 40–60 minutes and typically costs 350,000–450,000 VND. Grab is widely used and often cheaper, with clearly marked pickup points. Independent touts inside the arrivals hall should be avoided.

Rental cars

Self-drive rental is uncommon for foreign visitors given the complexity of local licensing and the notoriously aggressive Hanoi traffic. The practical alternative is a car with driver, bookable online through Grab, Vinasun, or hotel concierges, or at counters in the arrivals hall. Fixed-price hotel transfers are the standard option used by business travelers.
