Ulaanbaatar Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) is Mongolia's primary international gateway and the sole long-haul airport serving a country nearly the size of Western Europe. Opened in July 2021 in Khöshig Valley, 52 km (32 mi) south of Ulaanbaatar in Sergelen soum, it replaced the capacity-constrained Buyant-Ukhaa airport (ULN) inside the city. A single 11,811-ft (3,600-m) asphalt runway 11/29 sits at 4,482 ft (1,367 m) elevation and is capable of handling Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 traffic even in Mongolia's extreme summer heat. Built under a Japanese ODA loan and designed by a Mitsubishi-led consortium, the terminal is the largest civil-engineering project in Mongolian history and features a Chinggis Khaan-themed steppe motif. The airport serves 55 routes to 36 destinations on 19 airlines (2026), with home carrier MIAT Mongolian Airlines anchoring long-haul links to Frankfurt, Istanbul and Tokyo-Narita, while Hunnu Air, Aero Mongolia and foreign operators such as Korean Air, Turkish Airlines and Air China fill out the regional and hub-connect network. UBN is also a key mining-logistics airport, supporting the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold project and other Gobi operations. At -40 C (-40 F) winter lows and +35 C (95 F) summer highs, UBN operates in one of the widest temperature ranges of any major commercial airport and relies on extensive de-icing pads and heated apron stands. The terminal is designed for 3 million annual passengers, with pre-sized provisions for a second runway and cargo city. The previous Buyant-Ukhaa airport inside Ulaanbaatar was constrained by a single 9,843-ft (3,000-m) runway hemmed in by housing; its replacement was a strategic priority of the Mongolian government for more than a decade. Operations are managed by Japanese-Mongolian joint venture NUBIA, the only privately operated international airport in the country, with Japan's Narita International Airport Corporation providing management know-how under the ODA framework.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Ulaanbaatar (Sergelen)

Public transportation

UB Airport Shuttle buses depart the terminal roughly hourly in line with flight arrivals, running 52 km (32 mi) to Sukhbaatar Square, the State Department Store and the Dragon Bus Terminal in Ulaanbaatar. One-way fare is around 15,000 MNT paid in cash or with the U-Money transit card. Journey time is 60-90 minutes depending on ring-road traffic.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed UBCab and Airport Taxi vehicles queue outside arrivals at government-set rates; ride-hailing app Ulaanbaatar Taxi offers an in-terminal metered alternative. Fares to central Ulaanbaatar typically run 80,000-120,000 MNT (25-35 USD) with a 15-25% surcharge at night. Agree on the price or confirm meter use before departure.

Rental cars

Sixt, Drive Mongolia and Tour Mongolia operate rental desks inside arrivals offering 4x4 SUVs and Toyota Land Cruisers - the default vehicle class for a country with minimal paved roads outside the capital. An International Driving Permit is required. Most overseas travellers engage a chauffeur-driven vehicle or a tour operator rather than self-driving the steppe.
