Taiyuan Wusu International is the main airport for Shanxi Province and its capital, Taiyuan, a city long associated with coal mining and heavy industry in northern China. Located about 15 km (9 mi) southeast of central Taiyuan at a high plateau elevation of 2,575 ft (785 m), TYN sits on the central loess belt and serves a provincial population of roughly 35M, including the ancient walled city of Pingyao (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and the mountain monastery complex of Wutai Shan. The airport handled around 11–13M passengers in recent normal years, placing it in the mid-tier of Chinese provincial airports. Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, and Shanxi-based Hebei Airlines account for most capacity, alongside Xiamen Air, Shenzhen Airlines, and low-cost operators Spring Airlines and Juneyao. TYN's 175 scheduled routes across 34 airlines cover 67 destinations, with heavy trunk service to Beijing Capital and Daxing, Shanghai Hongqiao and Pudong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, and Shenzhen. International and regional reach is limited but includes Seoul, Osaka, Bangkok, and Hong Kong, plus charter programs to Russian and Southeast Asian destinations. A single 10,500 ft (3,200 m) concrete runway (13/31) serves the T2 terminal, opened in 2014 to replace the older T1. TYN's high field elevation and winter-weather exposure — Taiyuan routinely sees sub-freezing temperatures from November through March — give it operationally demanding characteristics typical of inland Chinese airports. A major expansion has been committed under the Shanxi provincial master plan, with a new T3 terminal and second runway scheduled to roughly triple capacity over the next decade and support the province's ongoing diversification away from coal toward cultural tourism and high-end manufacturing.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Taiyuan

Public transportation

There is currently no metro or subway line serving TYN, so airport shuttle buses are the main public-transit option. Multiple shuttle lines connect the terminal with Taiyuan Railway Station, Taiyuan South Railway Station (the high-speed-rail interchange to Beijing, Zhengzhou, and Xi'an), and major commercial districts, at fares typically well under 30 CNY.

Taxis & rideshare

Official metered taxis queue 24/7 at the designated arrivals-hall stand. The trip to downtown Taiyuan takes 30–40 minutes and typically costs 50–80 CNY depending on traffic and winter conditions. Drivers rarely speak English; the destination address in Chinese characters is effectively required. Didi Chuxing is widely used and often more convenient for foreign visitors.

Rental cars

Counters for domestic chains China Auto Rental (CAR Inc.) and eHi are located in the arrivals hall. As throughout mainland China, a valid PRC driver's license is required: International Driving Permits alone are not recognized. Hiring a car with driver through online platforms or hotel concierges is the standard workaround for foreign travelers wanting to reach Pingyao or Wutai Shan.
