Lanzhou Zhongchuan International is the principal airport for Gansu Province in northwest China and one of the country's highest-altitude major airports, handling roughly 16M passengers annually across 189 weekly routes to 84 destinations on 28 airlines. LHW serves the city of Lanzhou (population 4.4M), a historic stop on the ancient Silk Road and the political and economic capital of Gansu — a narrow 1,600 km (1,000 mi) corridor province that forms the natural overland route between central China and Central Asia. The airport's strategic value has grown substantially with China's Belt and Road Initiative, which positions Lanzhou as a critical logistics node on the China–Europe freight rail corridor. LHW sits 70 km (43 mi) north of Lanzhou city at 6,388 ft (1,947 m) elevation, making it one of the highest major commercial airports in mainland China after Kunming, Guiyang, Xining, and the Tibetan airports (Lhasa, Shigatse, Kangding). Altitude-driven performance penalties require longer takeoff rolls, which is why the airport operates three long parallel runways — two at 13,123 ft (4,000 m) and one at 11,811 ft (3,600 m) — an unusually generous runway configuration for a traffic volume at this scale. The airport is a major base of China Eastern Airlines' Gansu branch and a focus city for China Southern Airlines. International reach is currently limited but growing as part of the Belt and Road strategy: direct service operates to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, and Almaty, with seasonal routes to Kathmandu and Tehran. LHW's primary operational significance is domestic: it serves as the principal connecting point for passengers traveling between northwestern provinces (Xinjiang, Qinghai, Ningxia, western Gansu) and the major eastern Chinese cities. A high-speed rail station integrated with the terminal provides direct connections to Lanzhou West station in 30–40 minutes, effectively extending the airport's catchment across the entire Hexi Corridor.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Lanzhou (Yongdeng)

Public transportation

The Zhongchuan Airport Railway Station is integrated with the terminal, with high-speed C-trains providing the fastest connection to Lanzhou West and Lanzhou Railway Stations in approximately 30–40 minutes for CNY 20–30 — the recommended option given the substantial 70 km distance to the city. Airport shuttle bus lines connect the terminal to various city destinations including major hotels and the main train station, though the 70–90 minute road journey is slower than rail.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis queue at the designated stand outside the arrivals hall. The long 70 km ride to downtown Lanzhou takes 60–90 minutes and costs roughly CNY 150–200, making it significantly more expensive than the rail option. Stick to the official taxi queue and ensure the driver uses the meter; unsolicited driver offers within the terminal are common and typically involve inflated fares. Ride-hailing via DiDi Chuxing is available from separate pickup zones.

Rental cars

Counters for China Auto Rental (神州租车) and eHi Car Services (一嗨租车) are located in the terminal. A valid People's Republic of China driver's license is typically required, as the International Driving Permit is not recognized under Chinese law. Chauffeur-driven rentals are widely available and are the practical alternative for overseas travelers. Booking in advance is advisable given limited counter staffing.
