Hosea Kutako International Airport is the primary international airport of Namibia, serving Windhoek and functioning as the country's strategic air gateway for tourism, mining exports, and Southern African Development Community connectivity. Named after the independence-era nationalist leader Hosea Kutako (1870–1970), the airport is located 28 mi (45 km) east of central Windhoek on the Khomas Highland plateau at an elevation of 5,640 ft (1,719 m) — placing it among the higher-altitude international airports in Africa and requiring measurable performance allowances for hot-and-high operations in Namibia's arid summer. The field handles the majority of Namibia's long-haul and regional traffic while Eros Airport (ERS) closer to central Windhoek handles general aviation. The airport handles 16 routes across 11 destinations through 9 airlines. FlyNamibia (the successor operation following Air Namibia's 2021 liquidation) anchors regional service, and the route network is dominated by major African and European carriers: Lufthansa operates the flagship direct long-haul to Frankfurt, Eurowings Discover (continuing the former Lufthansa codeshare slot) also connects Frankfurt, while Qatar Airways links WDH to its Doha hub, Ethiopian Airlines to Addis Ababa, South African Airways and Airlink to Johannesburg and Cape Town, and Kenya Airways to Nairobi. The Frankfurt link is particularly significant historically, reflecting Namibia's German colonial legacy and sustained German tourist traffic. The primary runway 08/26 measures 15,010 ft (4,575 m), among the longest commercial runways in Africa — a specification driven by hot-and-high takeoff performance requirements for fully-loaded widebodies bound for Europe in summer conditions. A secondary runway 16/34 at 5,000 ft (1,524 m) handles lighter aircraft and general aviation. The terminal is a single-building facility and has been the subject of long-discussed expansion plans. Hosea Kutako also functions as a significant cargo airport handling exports of perishable goods (fresh fish, grapes, meat) and mining support freight.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Windhoek

Public transportation

There is no scheduled public bus or train service to Hosea Kutako International. The principal shared-ride option is pre-booked private shuttle operators who serve all major Windhoek hotels and lodges. Seats must be reserved in advance; this is typically the most economical option for solo travelers without rental cars.

Taxis & rideshare

Airport-accredited taxis and private transfer services wait outside the arrivals terminal. Fares are typically fixed rather than metered, and the price should be confirmed before departure. The 28 mi (45 km) trip into central Windhoek takes 30 to 45 minutes along the B6 highway. Pre-booked transfers are widely used and the default option for most tourists.

Rental cars

Major international and specialized local agencies operate directly from the arrivals hall, including Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget, Bidvest, and Namibia-specialist operators offering equipped 4x4s with rooftop tents, refrigerators, and camping gear for self-drive safari tours. Advance booking is essential during the April to October peak season; a wide variety of vehicles from compact cars to fully-equipped 4x4 expedition vehicles is available.
